SFA bowling upsets nation’s No. 1 team in Sunday’s opening round of championship bracket play, finishes weekend with 7-6 record
JONESBORO, Ark. – An opening round victory over the nation's No. 1 ranked team highlighted SFA bowling's championship bracket play Sunday at Arkansas State's Mid-Winter Invitational inside the Jonesboro Bowling Center at the Hijinx Family Entertainment Center in Jonesboro, Arkansas. For their first competition of 2019, the Ladyjacks claimed a fourth-place finish among a 21-team tournament field by registering a 7-6 record and tallying 12,485 total pins across the three-day event.
Earning the No. 4 seed for Sunday's championship bracket, 10th-ranked SFA took a step toward the Mid-Winter Invitational title by downing third-seeded and top-ranked McKendree University 4-1 in best 4-of-7 Baker match format. After falling 200-171 in the opening game of the match, the Ladyjacks rebounded with 210-195, 259-181, 247-193 and 212-182 game victories.
Moving on to the second round, SFA matched up against fellow Southland Bowling League member, third-ranked and top-seeded Vanderbilt. The Commodores, who defeated the fourth-ranked and second-seeded Red Wolves in the first round, came out on top by a final count of 4-1, despite the Ladyjacks taking game one 161-150. The Ladyjacks jumped out to a 1-0 advantage after claiming game one 178-168, but the Bearcats rolled back-to-back games of 239 and 224 en route to winning the final four games of the match.
Senior Paige Beeney garnered all-tournament team honors after finishing second in the individual standings among 128 total bowlers. Only three pins shy of individual champion Bailey Delrose of Maryville University, Beeney knocked down 1,086 pins in five traditional team matches Saturday, averaging a game score of 217.2 and notching a career-best game of 267 in the 1,050-902 win over second-ranked Nebraska.
