‘Jacks take on 14-team tournament field at the True Blue Golf Club on Pawleys Island to begin 2018-19 season
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Just over four months removed from a third-place finish at the 2018 Southland Conference Championship this past April, the Stephen F. Austin men's golf team is set to begin a new chapter and tee off the 2018-19 season. The Lumberjacks will begin their campaign this weekend at the Golfweek Program Challenge in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, at the True Blue Golf Club.
The Format
The Golfweek Program Challenge is a three-day, 54-hole tournament that will get underway Sunday, Sept. 9 and finish up on Tuesday, Sept. 11 with one round played each day.
The Course
The True Blue Golf Club features a longer par-72, 6,926-yard course with enormous fairways and challenging framed by waste bunkers.
The Tournament Field
SFA will take on a 14-team tournament field comprised of men's golf programs from around the nation. Campbell, Valparaiso, Presbyterian, Florida Gulf Coast, Alabama State, South Dakota, Bradley, Delaware, Old Dominion and Gardner-Webb will join a trio of Ohio Valley Conference programs in Austin Peay, Tennessee Tech and Jacksonville State to complete the tournament field. The 'Jacks are the lone representatives from the Southland.
The Lineup
Seniors Angelo Leyvani, a 2018 All-Southland Second Team selection, and returning All-Southland honorable mention member Jake Hendrix headline SFA's five-man lineup this weekend. The senior pair will be joined by sophomore Steven Fabik and freshmen Trent Lutze and Isiah Henderson, who will both be making their collegiate golf debuts.
Tee Times
Sunday morning's opening round will get underway starting at 6:30 a.m. CST with a double-tee start off of holes one and 10. The 'Jacks have been paired with Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian and will tee off beginning at 8 a.m. CST. Henderson will get things started for SFA, followed by Lutze teeing off at 8:09 a.m., Fabik at 8:18 a.m., Hendrix at 8:27 a.m. and Leyvani at 8:36 a.m.
The 2018-19 Roster
A total of six newcomers make up this year's roster with five freshmen and one transfer arriving in Texas' oldest town this August. In addition to freshmen Lutze and Henderson, the 'Jacks have welcomed freshmen Alec Brown from Pearland, Texas (Glenda Dawson HS), Jacob Garcia from Tomball, Texas (Tomball HS) and Johannes Gudmundsson from Reykjavík, Iceland (Commercial College of Iceland). Midland College sophomore transfer Justin Benson, a native of White Oak, Texas, also joins SFA for the 2018-19 season. The six newcomers will all vie for a spot on the Lumberjacks' lineup and look to compete this fall and spring. SFA brings back letter winners Leyvani, Hendrix and Fabik and returns redshirt sophomore Austin McKinney, who used his redshirt in 2017-18. Leyvani was the 'Jacks top golfer last season, averaging a 74.10 scoring average in 30 rounds played. He turned in five total top-20 finishes, including three top-10 placements and took home runner-up honors at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate to begin the 2017-18 season. Hendrix owned the third-lowest scoring average last year (74.71) and earned three top-20 finishes, including tying for third at the Bearkat Invitational. Fabik posted a 76.33 scoring average in 2017-18 and tallied two top-20 finishes, tying for 10th at the Bearkat Invitational and tying for 15th at the Southland Championship.
