SFA improves score by 24 strokes Tuesday, cards an even-par 288

ERIE, Colo. – The Ninth Annual Mark Simpson Invitational came to a close Tuesday afternoon with the Stephen F. Austin men's golf team moving up one spot in the final team standings after shooting an even-par 288 in the third and final round. The Lumberjacks (46-over 910) turned in the seventh-lowest score of the day, improving their second-round score by 24 strokes at the Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colorado.

Tournament host University of Colorado claimed the team title with a score of 14-under 850, while Pac-12 rival Utah took home runner-up honors two strokes behind the lead. Cal State Fullerton ended the 54-hole, two-day event in third place, tallying a 1-over 865.

Senior Angelo Leyvani (7-over 223) rose 16 spots Tuesday to finish the tournament tied for 38th after shooting a 1-under 71 in the final round. Fellow senior Jake Hendrix (8-over 224) stayed tied for 46th after the final 18 holes, turning in a 1-over 73 in the final round. Sophomore Steven Fabik (12-over 228) climbed 13 spots after carding a 1-under 71 in the third round to finish the tournament tied for 64th.

Freshman Isiah Henderson (21-over 237) improved his second-round score by 10 strokes Tuesday as he shot a 1-over 73 on the challenging and lengthy par-72, 7,676-yard course. Fellow freshman Alec Brown (25-over 241), who made his intercollegiate tournament debut Monday, likewise improved upon his score by 10 strokes after tallying a 4-over 76 on the final 18 holes.

Trevor Olkowski of Colorado and Kyler Dunkle of Utah finished atop the player leaderboard following 54 holes of play with both men carding a 9-under 207, before Dunkle claimed the individual title on a single-hole playoff. Colorado's Daniel O'Loughlin (5-under 211) rounded out the top three four strokes off the lead.

The 'Jacks will take a three week break from competing before playing in their fourth tournament of the fall season Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 15-16 at the Louisiana Tech Squire Creek Invitational in Ruston, Louisiana.
