Men’s Golf Completes Day One of Play at Ninth Annual Mark Simpson Invitational

Senior Jake Hendrix paces ‘Jacks through first two rounds, SFA cards scores of 22-over 310 and 24-over 324
ERIE, Colo. – The Stephen F. Austin men's golf team completed the first two rounds of play late Monday at the highly competitive Ninth Annual Mark Simpson Invitational in Erie, Colorado. Held on the challenging and lengthy par-72, 7,676-yard Colorado National Golf Club course, the Lumberjacks shot a 22-over 310 in the opening round and a 24-over 326 on the second 18 holes as tournament host the University of Colorado holds a three-stroke lead with a 36-hole score of 8-under 568.
The Pac-12's Utah is in second place following the first day of play of the two-day, 54-hole event with a 5-under 571, while Cal State Fullerton sits in third place with a 6-over 582. Fellow Southland Conference member Houston Baptist turned in a two-round total of 10-over 586 to stand in fourth place of the 16-team field.
Senior Jake Hendrix paced SFA in the first two rounds, tallying scores of 5-over 77 and 2-over 74 to hold a cumulative mark of 7-over 151 and stand tied for 46th on the individual leaderboard. Fellow senior Angelo Leyvani carded identical scores of 4-over 76 in the opening two rounds to hold an 8-over 152 and sit tied for 54th.
Sophomore Steven Fabik posted a day one total of 13-over 157 as freshman Isiah Henderson claimed a 20-over 164. Competing in his inaugural collegiate golf tournament, freshman Alec Brown shot a combined 21-over 165 on the first day of play.
Three players lead the 95-man field with Utah's Kyler Dunkle and Colorado's Trevor Olkowski and Daniel O'Loughlin each carding two-round scores of 5-under 139. Cal State Fullerton's Dalton Daniel (2-under 142) and Grand Canyon's Filip Lundell (1-under 143) are three and four strokes off the lead, respectively.
Tuesday morning's third and final round will get underway in a staggered shotgun format starting at 8:55 a.m. CST. The top four teams in the team standings, Colorado, Utah, Cal State Fullerton and Houston Baptist, will tee off of hole one beginning at 8:55 a.m., while the 'Jacks will get started at 9:15 a.m. SFA is paired with Northern Colorado, Cal State Northridge and Southern Utah for the third round Tuesday with Hendrix teeing off from hole 10, Leyvani from hole 11, Fabik hole 12 and both Brown and Henderson hole 13.
