Second Scrimmage of Season Awaits SFA Football Saturday Morning

‘Jacks will take to the turf of Homer Bryce Stadium for just the second time of fall camp
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – As the 92nd season of college football in Texas' oldest town quickly approaches, fans and supporters of Stephen F. Austin will have the opportunity to watch the football team in a live scrimmage once again Saturday morning. The Lumberjacks are set to host the full-contact scrimmage in complete pads at 8:15 a.m. as SFA takes to the turf of Homer Bryce Stadium for just the second time of the preseason.
The 'Jacks will run approximately 100 plays showcasing what they have been working on in the first 13 practices of fall camp. In addition to spotting the ball to begin all drives, SFA will work on special teams with each drive ending in the appropriate special teams play, an extra point attempt, field goal attempt or punt. Following touchdowns and to begin each half of the scrimmage, the 'Jacks will conduct a kickoff.
First, second and third-team players will all take reps as both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball perfect their gameday playbook and communication. With competitions among each position heating up, players will have the opportunity to stand out and prove themselves Saturday morning in the game-like scrimmage.
"I'm looking for some guys to step up," interim head coach Jeff Byrd said. "Obviously, we still have some competition for those starting spots and there is competition to be on that second team. Anytime you have competition, that makes people better. We're looking for somebody to take that next step to show that they're ready to go."
"We're hoping for a lot of energy tomorrow and we're hoping it will be physical," coach Byrd added about Saturday's scrimmage. "Both the offense and defense have all of their stuff in so we'll be able to turn it loose and play a little bit. We're just excited about seeing what's going to happen with the full package."
In quite humid conditions Friday morning, SFA hosted a shorter practice in helmets, shoulder pads, jerseys and shorts on the two grass practice fields behind the athletics fieldhouse. The 16-period practice session got underway with the Lumberjacks' typical warmup positional drills and stretching, before the team worked on punts, punt returns, PATs and field goal blocks.
Following two periods of additional positional group work, SFA ran 24 plays in 6-on-8 drills with the quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers going against the linebackers and defensive backs. The Lumberjacks' offensive and defensive lines matched up against one another for one-one-one work preceding the first and second-team units conducting 20 run/pass option plays. From there, SFA completed eight first-and-10 blitz pickup running plays before wrapping up the 13th practice of fall camp with 12 plays focused on screens and draws.
"We talk about energy every day," Byrd commented on keeping the team motivated as fall camp continues. "Camp is obviously long and it draws out. When you're going against yourself you kind of get tired of those things but the guys should be commended for the energy their bringing. We try to change things with the tempo and do something different. We had a movie afternoon yesterday to try to change it up and make sure we keep it going, but the players have been responsible for the tempo and energy and I'm pleased with that."
Fall Camp Continues
SFA will return to the grass and continue its fall camp practice schedule Sunday afternoon when the 'Jacks host a 3:15 p.m. workout in shoulder pads, helmets, jerseys and shorts. Monday, SFA will go back to morning practices with an 8:15 a.m. session in shells.
With the exception of the Lumberjacks' three intra-squad scrimmages, all practices will take place on the two grass practice fields behind the SFA athletics fieldhouse.
