SFA Football Fall Camp Report | Wide Receivers

The ‘Jacks returned to the grass Monday morning for their ninth practice of fall camp following an off day Sunday due to inclement weather
The 2018 Stephen F. Austin football season is just around the corner and the Lumberjacks have begun fall camp, beginning the countdown to the 92nd season of Lumberjack football in Nacogdoches. Throughout the preseason camp, SFAJacks.com will break down each position or area of the team, this evening highlighting the wide receivers.
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – After a successful opening scrimmage of the 2018 season over the weekend, the Stephen F. Austin football team returned to the pair of grass practice fields behind the athletics fieldhouse for its ninth practice of fall camp Monday morning. The Lumberjacks took to the gridiron in shells, practicing in helmets and shoulder pads after going full contact in complete pads for just the second time of the preseason Saturday morning.
After having its originally scheduled ninth practice rained out Sunday afternoon, SFA hosted a 20-session workout beginning promptly at 8:15 a.m. Monday. Fresh from the unexpected off day Sunday, the 'Jacks picked back up right where they left off from Saturday's season-opening scrimmage.
SFA began the workout with its usual pre-practice drills, stretching and dynamic warmup, before jumping into several periods of specific drills focused on each position. Special teams were also an emphasis in the morning's early going as punters and punt returners worked on their crafts. The 'Jacks then spent three periods working on the run game, while wide receivers and defensive backs took part in one-one-one drills.
The next three sessions were spent with skill position players getting together to run 24 plays as the offensive and defensive lines participated in one-on-one drills. SFA ran 32 full team plays to continue its playbook install and wrap up the ninth practice of fall camp. First, the 'Jacks ran 12 running plays, followed by eight pass blitz pickup plays and an additional 12 first-and-10 plays.
"First of all, I think this is the most energy I've been around in an August camp at SFA in a long time," assistant coach Jeremy Moses said following Monday's practice. "You can feel it underneath your toes, you can feel it as you move around out here on the field, the excitement within each and every day."
"We got to see a little bit of that energy on Saturday with the scrimmage," the co-offensive coordinator continued. "In my opinion, it was probably the most fluid scrimmage we've had at Stephen F. Austin in quite some time as far as the offense, defense and special teams flowing together. Guys were making plays on both sides of the ball and the communication between the sidelines was fantastic. That was exciting, that was special and a different deal than we've had in the past as far as the tempo is concerned."
"We had a day off yesterday carrying into today's practice but it was still the same energy and enthusiasm," added Moses. "We didn't quite have the same execution as we did on Saturday, a couple of dropped balls here and a couple missed assignments there, which are all things you would like to clean up in camp. It's always an opportunity to challenge them for the next day. My anticipation is tomorrow when they come in, their hair is going to be on fire and those mistakes we made today will be corrected by the time we get to tomorrow. That's the type of group we have and that's the type of players I have in the receiver corps."
Wide Receivers
SFA features a very talented wide receiver group once again in 2018, highlighted by returning All-Southland Conference Second Team selection Tamrick Pace. On pace to etch his name in SFA's record books for career receptions, receiving yards and touchdown receptions, Pace reached the 1,000-yard receiving mark last season in just 15 games played. The preseason All-Southland Second Team receiver has amassed 1,481 yards on 105 catches and scored 13 touchdowns in his first two seasons as a Lumberjack. In 2017, Pace led the team in receptions (53) and receiving yards (645) for the second consecutive season. He needs just 48 catches and five touchdown receptions to break into SFA's top-10 career lists in both of those categories and ranks 23rd in career receiving yards among all 'Jacks who have played the game.
Seniors Terian Goree and Frank Iheanacho will also be big targets for whoever is named the Lumberjacks' primary gunslinger after both were two of SFA's top receivers in 2017. Likewise, junior Cody Williams is set for a breakout year after making three starts at wideout last season.
"Across the board we are deep at every receiver," Pace commented after Monday's workout. "Everybody is fast and everybody can make plays, that's what I'm excited about for this fall."
"Those are two guys I look up to," Pace said about senior receivers Goree and Iheanacho. "Seeing the hard work they put in every day just makes me want to work hard too. I know this is their last season and they want to go out strong with a bunch of wins so I'm doing whatever I can to help them. I would want somebody to do the same thing for me next year when I'm a senior.
Goree, a preseason All-Southland Third Team pick by Phil Steele's FCS Magazine, made 10 starts and appeared in all 11 games last fall as the Lumberjacks' second-leading receiver with 43 catches for 339 yards. He tied for the second-most touchdowns scored among all SFA receivers and averaged 7.9 yards per reception. Goree hauled in five or more receptions on six different occasions. Iheanacho started nine games in 2017 and played in all 11, reeling in 32 catches for 317 yards and averaging 9.9 yards per reception. Williams made three starts and appeared in eight games last season, recording 15 catches for 162 yards and averaging 10.8 yards per reception. He claimed at least one catch in seven different contests and had four receptions on two occasions.
Sophomore Dylan Parker looks to step into a much larger role this fall after appearing in all 11 games as a true freshman last year.
Redshirt freshmen Josh Thompson and Thomas Nolley were both equally impressive during spring ball and look to be contributors to SFA's offense this fall. The pair are two of four wide receivers who redshirted in 2017, joining redshirt freshman David Crenshaw and redshirt junior Lar'Darion Cobb.
A trio of transfers will add even more depth to a very talented group with the additions of redshirt freshman Calvin Clater (Bowling Green), sophomore Remi Simmons (Garden City C.C.) and redshirt freshman Ricky Rollerson (Illinois State). Rollerson will have to sit out a year due to NCAA transfer rules coming from a fellow FCS institution, while Simmons is more than ready to help out in the Lumberjacks' air attack following spring camp.
SFA also welcomes a pair of talented true freshmen wideouts in Braison Rudd (New Braunfels Christian Academy) and QuenTyvian "Q" Borders (San Augustine HS).
Fall Camp Continues
SFA has 11 remaining practices of fall camp, returning to the grass fields Tuesday morning at 8:15 a.m. and going live for just the third time of the preseason. The 'Jacks will be in complete pads Tuesday for full contact football, before returning to an afternoon practice Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. in shoulder pads and helmets.
With the exception of the Lumberjacks' three intra-squad scrimmages, all practices will take place on the two grass practice fields behind the SFA athletics fieldhouse.
