‘Jacks host lighter practice in helmets Friday morning leading up to first scrimmage of fall camp Saturday
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – For the first time leading up to the 2018 season, the Stephen F. Austin football team will participate in a scrimmage Saturday morning at 8:15 a.m. inside Homer Bryce Stadium. The Lumberjacks, who completed their seventh practice of fall camp Friday morning, will take to the turf for the first time of the preseason and put on full pads for just the second time this August.
SFA football fans will have the opportunity to see the team in live action Saturday morning as the 'Jacks go full contact and attempt to replicate game-like situations. Running approximately 90 plays, SFA's first, second and third-team guys on the depth chart will have a chance to prove themselves as each unit is scheduled to participate in approximately 30 plays. The 'Jacks will be conducting drives starting at the offense's 30 and 40-yard line, in addition to spotting the ball at the defense's 30 and 40-yard line. SFA will also work on its special teams, conducting field goals and extra-point attempts.
"We're trying to keep the energy and effort that we've had," interim head coach Jeff Byrd said previewing Saturday's opening scrimmage. "I thought we've had great energy and effort through all these practices. We've had ups and downs with assignments and those things but that's to be expected. I just hope the guys will play hard and show us the same energy they've brought every day."
Friday morning's seventh practice of fall camp took place once again on the two grass practice fields behind the athletics fieldhouse as the 'Jacks went back to work after having their first off day Thursday. Dodging oncoming rain and thunderstorms, the team marched onto the field for a shorter, 17-session workout and practiced in just helmets, jerseys and shorts preceding Saturday's full-pad scrimmage.
Under overcast skies and in cooler but still humid conditions, SFA jumped into its pre-practice positional drills a tad earlier than usual at 8 a.m. Following their usual stretching and dynamic warmups, the 'Jacks spent three sessions on special teams with an emphasis on PATs, field goal blocks and kickoff returns. The quarterback and running back groups worked on running routes for two sessions, while other positional groups honed in on specific drills.
SFA's offensive and defensive units, minus linemen, ran approximately 24 plays before the entire team came together for eight pass blitz pickup plays. The 'Jacks then conducted 12 additional team plays, continuing to learn SFA's offensive and defensive playbook, before simulating an end of game two-minute drill.
Each positional coach met with their group for about five minutes before coach Byrd brought everyone together for a team huddle, bringing an end to the first week of fall camp.
"I think our run game on offense has really improved," added coach Byrd after Friday's practice. "We're doing a great job up front of getting some movement and things like that. Defensively, team speed is what we've been impressed with. There looks like there are holes and then the guys are covering it up and taking away that space. Those two things I'm really excited about."
Fall Camp Continues
Following Saturday's scrimmage, SFA will return to its preseason practices Sunday afternoon as the 'Jacks will head back to the grass practice fields for a 3:15 p.m. workout in shells.
With the exception of the Lumberjacks' three intra-squad scrimmages, all practices will take place on the two grass practice fields behind the SFA athletics fieldhouse.
