Junior Lumberjack wide receiver one of 169 nominees nationwide for distinguished accomplishments off the field
WACO, Texas – For the third consecutive year the Stephen F. Austin football program has a nominee for the Allstate and American Football Coaches Association's (AFCA) Good Works Team®. Junior wide receiver Cody Williams appears as one of 169 nominees for the 2018 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®.
As a nominee for a spot on the prestigious team, Williams joins a select group of student-athletes who have the honor of being commended for their distinguished accomplishments off the field. The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® has been one of the most esteemed honors in college football for more than 25 years. Student-athletes who are nominated for the award not only demonstrate a unique dedication to community service and desire to make a positive impact on the lives around them, but they also show tremendous perseverance.
A native of Pearland, Texas, Williams is a two-sport athlete at SFA, competing on both the Lumberjack football and baseball teams. He actively volunteers his time with several community service projects throughout the academic year, including The BIG Event, SFA football's "Read to Succeed" program and freshmen move-in day on campus. Over this past school year, Williams participated in baseball's partnering with Keeper of the Game, in addition to helping out with baseball's Easter egg hunt and Lumberjack football's summer camps.
Along with volunteering his personal time, Williams is involved with clubs and organizations on campus. A member of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), Williams is actively involved with Athletes in Action.
Holding a 3.69 cumulative grade point average as a pre-med major, Williams was named to the 2017 Southland Conference Football All-Academic Team, earned a spot on both the fall 2016 and fall 2017 Southland Commissioner's Honor Roll and appeared on the fall 2017 SFA President's List and fall 2016 SFA Dean's List. At SFA athletics' annual Champions Dinner this past spring, Williams was named the 2018 Cally Belcher Award winner. An accolade given out each year to a member of the Lumberjack football team who best characterizes the traits for which the late Cally Belcher is remembered, a desire to succeed with a determination and a love the game. Belcher was a two-time All-Southland defensive back for SFA (1991-93) who collapsed on the field during a spring practice before passing away.
After playing in 10 games as a true freshman in 2016, Williams appeared in eight games and made three starts at wide receiver for the 'Jacks as a sophomore last fall. Williams hauled in 15 catches for 162 yards in 2017, averaging 10.8 yards per reception and 20.2 receiving yards per game. He claimed at least one catch in seven different contests and recorded a season-best four catches against No. 25 McNeese and at sixth-ranked Central Arkansas, while grabbing a career-long 31-yard reception in the 37-31 victory over Incarnate Word. On the baseball diamond, Williams played in 31 contests, making nine starts in the outfield and holding a batting average of .235 with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
A special voting panel consisting of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® members and prominent college football media members will review submissions from sports directors across the nation to select the 2018 Good Works Team®. Tim Tebow, two-time national champion, Heisman Trophy winner and 2009 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® member, will once again headline the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® voting panel.
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® is comprised of 11 players from the FBS level and 11 players from the FCS, NCAA Divisions II, III and the NAIA levels and one honorary head coach. To be in consideration by Allstate and the AFCA for a nomination, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing.
The final roster of 22 award recipients and honorary head coach will be unveiled in September.
In addition to Tebow and Prendergast, the 2018 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® selection panel members includes: former Good Works Team® members Zaid Abdul-Aleem (Duke, 1994 team), Matt Stinchcomb (Georgia, 1997, 1998 teams), Brian Brenberg (St. Thomas, 2001 team), Mike Proman (Amherst, 2002 team) and Wes Counts (Middle Tennessee State, 1999 team); media members Kirk Herbstreit (ESPN), Blair Kerkhoff (Kansas City Star) and Paul Myerberg (USA TODAY); Georgetown College head coach Bill Cronin; 2001 AFCA President and current athletic director at Virginia Union University Joe Taylor.
