
Six Bowlers Claim NTCA All-Academic Team Plaudits

Ladyjacks well represented by the National Tenpin Coaches Association’s All-Academic Team with six honorees; SFA finishes with 23rd-highest team GPA for the 2017-18 school year
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Six Stephen F. Austin bowlers were recently recognized by the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) for their outstanding academic achievement throughout the 2017-18 school year. Junior Paige Beeney, freshman Sarah Voiers, senior Kelsi Anderson, freshman Dakota Faichnie, senior Stephanie Schwartz and freshman Annie Leihardt all landed a spot on the NTCA All-Academic Team as the Ladyjacks collected NTCA All-Academic recognition as a team.
During the 2017-18 academic year, SFA boasted the 23rd-highest grade point average in the nation as a team. The Ladyjacks earned a 3.39 GPA as one of just 38 bowling programs nationally to own a team GPA above 3.2.
Beeney, a native of Salado, Texas, held an unblemished 4.00 GPA for the school year as an interdisciplinary studies major. She completed the 2017-18 season with the third-highest pinfall average on the team (194.54) and notched 10 games of 200 or better. Holding an impressive 3.81 GPA in her first year of college and majoring in psychology, Voiers held a 190.89 pinfall average for the season. The Chesterton, Indiana, native bowled six games over 200 and posted a career-high 267 game at the Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawk Classic.
San Antonio, Texas, native Kelsi Anderson achieved a 3.79 GPA for the academic year while majoring in health science. She registered five games at or above the 200 mark during 2017-18 and averaged 185.44 pins per game. Faichnie, a native of Innisfil, Ontario, Canada, held a 3.63 GPA in her first collegiate year as an agriculture/pre-veterinary science major. Tallying seven games of 200 or better, Faichnie earned a 183.50 pinfall average for the season.
The first four-time NCAA Division I NTCA All-American First Team selection, Schwartz boasted a 3.60 GPA for the academic year as an interdisciplinary studies major. On the lanes, Schwartz capped her terrific Ladyjack career by leading the team once again with a 210.04 pinfall average and recording 29 200+ games. The Racine, Wisconsin, native bowled a program record tying 290 game at the Prairie View A&M Invitational before claiming her third Southland Bowling League All-Tournament Team accolade.
Georgetown, Texas, native Annie Leihardt also held a 3.60 GPA in her inaugural year at SFA, while majoring in criminal justice.
Each season the NTCA recognizes NCAA bowling teams that excel academically. To be recognized, programs must have a cumulative team GPA of a 3.2 or higher for the academic school year. For the 2017-18 academic school year, a record-breaking 38 bowling programs achieved a cumulative team GPA of 3.2 or higher.
Likewise, the NTCA recognizes student-athletes who have excelled in the classroom. To be recognized, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher for the academic school year. This year there were 268 honorees, representing NCAA bowling programs at 55 schools. It was a record for both individuals and schools since the inception of the award in 2006.
