One Hundred SFA Student-Athletes Named to Southland's Spring 2018 Commissioner's Honor Roll

FRISCO, Texas - In a release issued by the Southland Conference this week the league posted its Commissioner's Honor Roll members for the spring 2018 semester an on that list were exactly 100 Stephen F. Austin student-athletes.

The Southland Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll acknowledges participants in all sports sponsored by the league and its member institutions. The honor roll recognizes student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.00 GPA. Student-athletes must have been eligible to compete in a conference sport during the academic year in which the nomination occurs.

"We are thrilled to acknowledge the great academic work of so many Southland Conference student-athletes during the spring semester," commented league Commissioner Tom Burnett. "It's simply remarkable to see these hard-working students, with so many other things they're involved with, continue to improve in the classroom on their way to graduation."

Women's track & field led the way for SFA with 31 representatives on the list while men's track & field (19) and softball (16) ranked second and third in total number of student-athletes on the list. Women's basketball (10), baseball (eight), women's golf (six), women's tennis (six), men's basketball (two) and men's golf (two) each put at least two student-athletes on the list as well.

Of the 100 SFA student-athletes on the list, an impressive 18 of them boasted a perfect 4.00 GPA for the spring 2018 semester. Included in that group were baseball's Will Cerny and Carson Chapman, women's basketball's Kia Fisker, women's golf's Jamee Jorgensen, softball's Jordan Llanas, men's track & field's Charles Fentress, Chad Horstmann and Cord Neal and women's track & field's Samantha Brashears, Claire Crone, Avery Ellis-Byerly, Taylor Kunkel, Aliece Milton, Kelsey Ramirez, Samantha Roberts, Anna Scheuring, Haley Schultz and Taryn Surratt.

For the entire 2017-18 academic year, 179 SFA student-athletes collected Southland Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll recognition which helped continue a trend of growth in the league's final Honor Roll numbers. In all 2,436 student-athletes in the 13-team league earned a spot on the Honor Roll which marked a 2.4% increase from the 2,379 student-athletes who were recognized in 2016-17.

The increase in Southland student-athletes with a perfect GPA saw a marked increase of 11.4% from 2016-17 to 2017-18 with 536 4.0 GPAs recorded in 2017-18 compared to 481 in 2016-17.
