Men’s Golf Takes Home Third at Bearkat Invitational

‘Jacks tie third-lowest single round this season by shooting a 2-under 286 in the final round Tuesday
MONTGOMERY, Texas – In its final tune-up before the 2018 Southland Conference Championship nearly three weeks away, the Stephen F. Austin men's golf team turned in a third-place finish at the Bearkat Invitational in Montgomery, Texas. The Lumberjacks shot their third-lowest single round score this season by tallying a 2-under 286 in the final round Tuesday morning at the Walden on Lake Conroe Golf Club.
Finishing with a three-round score of 17-over 881, SFA placed third among the 10-team field and completed play 10 strokes off of runner-up finisher the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (7-over 871). Tournament host Sam Houston State captured the title by shooting a 3-under 285 in the third round Tuesday and totaling a final score of 7-under 857.
Junior Jake Hendrix (Austin, Texas) shot a career-low individual round of 5-under 67 Tuesday, tying the fourth-lowest single round by any SFA golfer in program history, and earned his first top-five finish of his career. After finishing Monday's two rounds tied for 15th with a cumulative score of 5-over 149, Hendrix vaulted to a third-place tie with a three-round total at even-par 216. He finished five strokes off of second-place finisher William Holcomb (5-under 211) of Sam Houston State and nine strokes off of individual title winner the Bearkats' Jake McCrory (9-under 207).
Also placing in the top 10 was both junior Angelo Leyvani (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman Steven Fabik (Carrollton, Texas), who tied for 10th with two-day scores of 7-over 223. Fabik tied his career-low for a single round with a 2-under 70 on the par-72, 6,756-yard course Tuesday to earn his first top-10 finish of his career. Leyvani shot a 5-over 77 in the final round to post his second top 10 and fourth top-20 finish of the season.
Freshman Andy Lopez (Dallas, Texas) recorded a 4-over 76 in the third round to tie for 18th among the 63 total golfers with a three-round tally of 10-over 226. After registering scores of 6-over 78 in the first two rounds of play, senior Blake Stock (Hewitt, Texas) improved his score by five strokes on the final 18 holes of play with a 1-over 73. He finished with a three-round total of 13-over 229 to tie for 25th.
The third-place showing marks the second-straight top-five placement for the 'Jacks and fourth in 2017-18.
