Men’s Golf Completes 2017-18 Season with Third-Place Finish at Southland Championship

‘Jacks tie second-lowest score of day three with 20-over 308 final round, finish with three-day total of 51-over 915
McKINNEY, Texas – The 2017-18 season for the Stephen F. Austin men's golf team came to a close Wednesday afternoon at the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney, Texas, as the Lumberjacks placed third at the 2018 Southland Conference Men's Golf Championship. SFA tied the second-lowest score of the day in the final round by shooting a 20-over 308 on the par-72, 7,219-yard Dye Course, battling windy and rainy conditions with much cooler temperatures.
Finishing with a three-day total of 51-over 915, the 'Jacks completed the league championship 27 strokes from Southland champion Sam Houston State. The Bearkats shot a 24-over 888 across the three rounds to capture their third Southland title since 2014. McNeese took home runner-up honors with a three-round tally 22 strokes lower than that of SFA, owning a 29-over 893.
Junior Angelo Leyvani paced the 'Jacks and shone during Wednesday's third round, shooting the second-lowest score of the day at even-par 72 and rising an impressive 13 spots on the leaderboard. He completed the three-day, 54-hole championship with a final score of 7-over 223 to tie for fifth, just seven strokes off of individual title winner Lewis George of Central Arkansas (even-par 216). McNeese's Blake Elliott earned individual runner-up honors by posting a three-round mark of 1-over 217, while Ian Berrigan of McNeese and Sam Houston State's Levi Valadez tied for third with final scores of 6-over 222.
No SFA golfer finished lower than 26th among the 55-competitor field as freshman Steven Fabik tied for 15th with a three-day tally of 14-over 230. Fellow freshman Andy Lopez had a challenging day in the less than ideal conditions but with strong first and second rounds finished 22nd, posting a final score of 17-over 233.
Junior Jake Hendrix rose 16 spots on the individual leaderboard by carding a 2-over 74 on the final 18 holes of play, earning a 25th-place finish with a three-round score of 21-over 237. Senior Blake Stock, finishing out his Lumberjack career with his final tournament in a SFA uniform, tied for 26th after shooting a 22-over 238 across the three days.
The third-place team finish marks the seventh time in the last 10 years the 'Jacks finished among the top five at the conference championship.
