Men’s Golf Remains in Third Place Following Second Round of Southland Championship

‘Jacks improve opening round score by seven strokes Tuesday, shoot 12-over 300 in second round
McKINNEY, Texas – After 36 holes of play at the 2018 Southland Conference Men's Golf Championship in McKinney, Texas, Stephen F. Austin remains in third place with a two-day tally of 31-over 607. The Lumberjacks improved their opening round score by seven strokes to shoot a 12-over 300 in the second round Tuesday. SFA sits 30 strokes off the lead, held by Sam Houston State (1-over 576), and 22 strokes behind second-place McNeese (9-over 585).
Two 'Jacks are tied for 10th among 55 total golfers as both freshmen Steven Fabik and Andy Lopez improved their first-round scores by four strokes to card 1-over 73's in round two of the championship. Fabik and Lopez both own a two-round total of 6-over 150 and are 10 strokes off the lead, which is held by McNeese's Blake Elliott (4-under 140) after he shot a 4-under 68 Tuesday. Central Arkansas' Lewis George is in second place with a two-day score of 1-under 143, while Sam Houston State's Austen Christiansen is in third place right at even-par 144.
Just one stroke behind Fabik and Lopez sits junior Angelo Leyvani, who is tied for 18th after registering a 5-over 77 in the second round to hold a two-day score of 7-over 151. Senior Blake Stock took two strokes off of his day one tally, recording a 5-over 77 during Tuesday's second round to stand tied for 25th on the individual leaderboard with a total mark of 12-over 156. Rounding out SFA's competitors is junior Jake Hendrix, who is tied for 41st after shooting a 9-over 81 during round two and owns a total score of 19-over 163.
The three-day, 54-hole championship will conclude tomorrow, Wednesday, April 25, with the third and final round getting underway in a double tee start off of holes 1 and 10 starting at 7:30 a.m. Originally scheduled to culminate with a single tee start off of hole 1, the Southland decided to move Wednesday's final round to a double tee start due to a 70 percent chance of rain.
For the third consecutive day the 'Jacks will be paired with McNeese and Sam Houston State for Wednesday's third round as the trio will tee off of hole 1 beginning at 8:25 a.m. Hendrix will get things started for SFA with a tee time right at 8:25 a.m., followed by Stock at 8:35 a.m., Leyvani at 8:45 a.m., Fabik at 8:55 a.m. and Lopez at 9:05 a.m.
The winner of the conference championship will gain the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship, held first at regional sites Monday-Wednesday, May 14-16. The selection show for the 2018 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship will take place Wednesday, May 2, and will be broadcast live on the Golf Channel, available nationwide.
