The four-time All-American earns second and third round victories Wednesday morning to advance to Saturday’s semifinal match
LINCOLN, Neb. – For the third consecutive year, Stephen F. Austin senior bowler Stephanie Schwartz will compete for an individual national title amongst a national television audience after advancing to the semifinals of the United States Bowling Congress' (USBC) 2018 Intercollegiate Singles Championships (ISC) Wednesday morning.
The Racine, Wisconsin, native claimed match-play wins in both the second and third rounds to reach the semifinals of the five-day national championship event held at the Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Nebraska. One of 24 competitors at the 2018 ISC, Schwartz out-bowled Veronica Cepeda of Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD-Savannah) in three games (611-536) during the second round. In the quarterfinal match, Schwartz was a 690-640 winner over Arkansas State's Taylor Davis.
Making her third-straight appearance in the ISC TV finals, which are slated for Saturday, April 21, Schwartz is looking to reach the title match after bowing in last year's semifinals.
"It means a lot to me to be able to represent my school on TV again," Schwartz said following her second and third round wins. "Being a senior, it would mean a lot to finally win, especially after coming up short the last two years. I'm really going to try and just take it one shot at a time. I think I got ahead of myself during the last two years, and that's what brought me down."
Schwartz will face Nebraska senior bowler Kelly Belzeski in Saturday's semifinal match as both the semifinals and title match will be bowled with one individual head-to-head game. The semifinals and finals of the 2018 ISC take place on Saturday, April 21 beginning at 3:15 p.m. CT. Both the ISC semifinals and finals will be televised on tape delay on CBS Sports Network next Tuesday, April 24 at 7 p.m. CT.
The Ladyjacks qualified for USBC's 2018 Intercollegiate Team Championships (ITC) back in March at the ITC sectional in Fairview Heights. SFA is one of 16 teams who will be competing for a national championship at the Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln. The 2018 ITC will get underway tomorrow, Thursday, April 19, with 24 Bakers games to determine seeding for the double-elimination match-play bracket. The first two rounds of match play will be best 4-of-7 Baker match format and will also take place on Thursday. The final day of match play on Friday, April 20, will determine who advances to the finals, held Saturday, April 21 with a best 3-of-5 Baker match.
All qualifying and match-play rounds of the 2018 ITC will be streamed live on BOWL.com's BowlTV.
SFA made a run at the 2017 ITC after finishing the qualifying round in 11th place, reaching the semifinals for the Ladyjacks' third top-four finish at a national tournament in the last three seasons.
