SFA is defeated 2-0 by top-seeded Arkansas State in the league’s title contest, falls 962-944 in traditional team match and 923-900 in Baker match
DALLAS – An historic run at the 2018 Southland Bowling League Championship came to an end Sunday for the Stephen F. Austin bowling team as the Ladyjacks fell 2-0 to top-seeded and third-ranked Arkansas State in the league's title match. SFA succumbed to a 962-944 score in the traditional team match before being out-bowled 923-900 in the Baker match.
The Ladyjacks, seeded fourth and ranked No. 6 in the nation, had upended No. 5 seed Tulane (2-1) in the tournament's opening round and pulled off upsets against the top-seeded Red Wolves (2-0) in the second round and No. 2 seed Vanderbilt (2-0) in the semifinals. Contrarily, Arkansas State had to run the table in the back draw Saturday in order to reach Sunday's title match.
Despite getting an outstanding game from junior Paige Beeney (Salado, Texas), who bowled to the tune of 232, in the traditional team match, SFA was unable to overcome three Arkansas State players posting 200-pin games. The Red Wolves' Jadee Scott-Jones and Jordan Richard each tallied games of 208, while Leah Glazer collected a 220. In addition to Beeney's performance, senior Stephanie Schwartz (Racine, Wis.) notched a 201 and freshman Dakota Faichnie (Innisfil, Ontario, Canada) added a 196 in the 18-pin match loss.
Needing a strong start to Baker match play, the Ladyjacks were hampered by a 141-pin opening game and quickly fell into a 43-pin deficit. SFA dropped by an additional 15 pins following a 213-198 game two loss. Trailing by 58 pins in the two teams' pinfall total, the Ladyjacks gained some ground in game three with a 192-175 triumph. However, SFA was unable to keep the momentum going and found itself behind by 47 pins going into game five after a 181-175 game four falter. The Ladyjacks did what they could in the final game but ultimately dropped the match by 23 pins after claiming game five by just 24 pins (194-170).
With the Southland Bowling League title, Arkansas State punched its ticket to the 2018 NCAA Women's Bowling Championship by gaining the league's automatic bid to the national tournament. It marks the 11th-straight year the Red Wolves will be heading to the NCAA tournament, held Thursday-Saturday, April 12-14 at the Tropicana Lanes in Clayton, Missouri.
For SFA, its postseason fate will be determined Wednesday, March 28 at 3 p.m. CT when the 2018 NCAA Women's Bowling Selection Show takes place live on NCAA.com.
For their strong performances all weekend at the 2018 Southland Bowling League Championship, both Schwartz and Faichnie were named to the all-tournament team. Schwartz averaged a 206.75 in four traditional team matches and registered a 240 Saturday in semifinal win over Vanderbilt, while Faichnie averaged a 195 in three individual games and earned a 211 during the traditional team match in the second-round upset of Arkansas State.
