Ladyjacks go 1-2 in bracket play Sunday, fall in 15th-place match to No. 18 North Carolina A&T after tallying 12,765 total pins over the weekend
SMYRNA, Tenn. – Play came to an end Sunday afternoon at the 14th Annual Columbia 300 Music City Classic in Smyrna, Tennessee, and the Stephen F. Austin bowling team took home 16th place among a 32-team field after going 1-2 in bracket play. The Ladyjacks concluded the three-day tournament hosted by fellow Southland Bowling League member Vanderbilt with a cumulative record of 6-7 and a pinfall total of 12,765.
For the first time since February of 2013 SFA did not finish within the top 10. The Ladyjacks' 16th-place showing snapped a streak of 51-straight tournaments with a top-10 team finish.
With a loaded tournament field that included 20 of the top 25 teams in the nation, SFA took on three nationally-ranked opponents in Sunday's final day of competition. After falling 4-1 to 15th-ranked Central Missouri in the opening round of bracket play, the sixth-ranked Ladyjacks took down No. 14 UAB 4-3 before being upended 4-2 by 18th-ranked North Carolina A&T in the 15th-place match.
Knotted at two games apiece against No. 15 Central Missouri in the first round, SFA was unable to bowl higher than a 199 in the following three games and faltered in each as the Jennies claimed a 235 in game three of the match.
Battling 14th-ranked UAB in their second bracket play match, the Ladyjacks found themselves trailing 2-1 before claiming game four by an impressive score of 225-151. SFA would then go on to take a 3-2 lead in the contest after winning game five 192-178. However, UAB tied things up at 3-3 with a 225-211 advantage in game six before the Ladyjacks put together another impressive performance in game seven, earning a 229-160 victory to take the match.
Bowling its highest game score of the day, SFA took a 2-1 lead on No. 18 North Carolina A&T in the 15th-place match with a 235-190 game three win. It would be the Ladyjacks' final game win of the day as the Aggies took the final three games, including a close 213-211 game five, to secure the match.
Defending national champion and second-ranked McKendree University won the tournament title by defeating Southland Bowling League counterpart and fifth-ranked Sam Houston State 4-2 in the championship. Third-ranked Arkansas State ousted 16th-ranked Saint Francis (Pa.) 4-1 for third place.
Junior Dakotah Hazlewood (Capron, Ill.) claimed all-tournament team honors after finishing sixth among 207 total bowlers in Saturday's traditional team matches. She claimed 1,064 pins in five individual games and averaged a 212.8 per game with a 240 bowled against Felician University, her second-highest individual game this season.
