Ladyjacks tally additional 4,697 pins Saturday in five traditional team matches, sit in 15th place with pinfall total of 9,300
SMYRNA, Tenn. – After two days of bowling at the Smyrna Bowling Center on the outskirts of the Nashville, Tennessee, metropolitan area, the Stephen F. Austin bowling team sits in 15th place out of 32 teams at the 14th Annual Columbia 300 Music City Classic. With 9,300 total pins and a 5-5 record across the two days, the Ladyjacks picked up an additional 4,697 pins during five traditional team matches Saturday and posted a 3-2 mark.
The tournament, hosted by fellow Southland Bowling League member and fourth-ranked Vanderbilt, is led by defending national champion and second-ranked McKendree University, who has accumulated 9,905 total pins and holds a perfect 10-0 record. Southland Bowling League counterpart and third-ranked Arkansas State is in second place with a pinfall total of 9,874, while No. 23 Lincoln Memorial University is third with 9,793 pins.
Ranked sixth in the latest National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) top-25 poll released last week, SFA earned three wins on the second day of play after starting 0-2. The Ladyjacks ended Saturday by defeating eighth-ranked Maryland-Eastern Shore, Felician University and Belmont Abbey College.
In its first two matches of the day, SFA was outpaced by No. 13 LIU Brooklyn (936-894) and 15th-ranked Central Missouri (1,050-910). No Ladyjack reached the 200-pin mark in their opening matchup as junior Paige Beeney (Salado, Texas) bowled a team-high 198 and junior Dakotah Hazlewood (Capron, Ill.) chipped in a 194. Against Central Missouri, Hazlewood led SFA with a game of 220, while senior Stephanie Schwartz (Racine, Wis.) came two pins shy of 200 with a 198.
The tide began to turn for the Ladyjacks in their third match, routing No. 8 Maryland-Eastern Shore 1,047-985 and recording their highest pinfall total of any match in the tournament. SFA got games of at least 200 from four different players led by Schwartz' 245 and Beeney's 212. Both senior Kelsi Anderson (San Antonio, Texas) and Hazlewood posted games right at 200 in the match.
Owning nearly a 100-pin margin over Felician University, the Ladyjacks picked up their second victory of the day with a final count of 963-865. Hazlewood once again shined as SFA's top bowler on the day, rolling a 240 for her second-highest individual game bowled this season. Schwartz added a 196 and Anderson contributed a 190.
The Ladyjacks ended the day with their most convincing win, an 883-680 rout of Belmont Abbey College. Hazlewood registered her fourth 200+ game of the day with a 210, while freshman Sarah Gill (Attleboro, Mass.) claimed a 206 in her first game bowled of the day.
Standing just outside the top five in the individual standings, Hazlewood finished sixth among 207 total bowlers with 1,064 pins and a 212.8 per game average in the five traditional team matches Saturday. Saint Francis' (Pa.) Sarah Littleton claimed the top spot with 1,145 pins and a 229 game average, while Arkansas State's Haley Richard recorded 1,081 pins and averaged a 216.2 for second place. Lincoln Memorial University's Christine Hansen placed third after totaling 1,077 pins and averaging a game score of 215.4.
The three-day event, which features 20 top-25 teams, will wrap up Sunday with three best 4-of-7 bracket play Baker matches beginning at 8:30 a.m. With seeding for Sunday's bracket play determined by teams' pinfall total from the first two days of competition, SFA earned the No. 15 seed and will be vying for a 13th-place finish. The Ladyjacks will get a rematch with No. 15 Central Missouri in the first round of tomorrow's bracket play.
