Stephanie Schwartz’ program record tying 290 game and Morgan Reising’s season-high 269 game highlight Ladyjacks’ traditional team pool play Saturday
ARLINGTON, Texas – Competing among eight of the top 10 teams in the nation, the Stephen F. Austin bowling team claimed an additional 5,055 pins Saturday during traditional team play and added two more victories to its win column at the Prairie View A&M Invitational in Arlington, Texas. Highlighted by a program record tying 290 individual game by senior Stephanie Schwartz (Racine, Wis.) and two other season highs from Ladyjack bowlers, SFA upped its pinfall total to 10,058 to sit in seventh place heading into Sunday's final day of play.
The impressive 12-team tournament held at the Bowling International Training & Research Center has been challenging at times to the Ladyjacks as SFA holds a 4-6 overall record and a game average of 201.2 through two days of competition. Fellow Southland Bowling League member and third-ranked Arkansas State owns the top spot with 10,360 total pins, while league counterpart and fourth-ranked Vanderbilt is in second place with a pinfall total of 10,319. Defending national champion and second-ranked McKendree University is third with 10,230 pins.
One of the Ladyjacks' two wins on the day came in the opening tilt Saturday against No. 19 Louisiana Tech. SFA posted a score of 1,056, compared to the Lady Techsters' 935, and had four bowlers reach the 200-pin plateau, including junior Paige Beeney's (Salado, Texas) 234, Megan Eaglehouse's (Cibolo, Texas) 221, Schwartz' 215 and freshman Sarah Gill's (Attleboro, Mass.) 206.
No Ladyjack was able to bowl better than a 195 in the second match of the day against top-ranked Nebraska as the Huskers rolled to a 1,015-870 triumph. However, that changed drastically when SFA matched up against 25th-ranked and tournament host Prairie View A&M. The Ladyjacks bowled their best team match of the season and one of the best in program history. Schwartz bowled an eye-popping 290 to tie the program record for the highest individual game bowled by a Ladyjack, while fellow senior Morgan Reising (Lewisville, Texas) claimed a season-high 269. Aided by Schwartz and Reising's impressive games SFA combined for a score of 1,150, which is the second-highest team score ever recorded in school history. The season-high score is the best team match the Ladyjacks have bowled since posting a 1,140 in a win over then 19th-ranked UAB at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational back on Oct. 21.
Kiara Grant is the only other SFA bowler to reach the 290 mark, doing so in the pool play win over McKendree University at the 2016 NCAA Championship (April 15, 2016). Reising's 269 is the third-highest individual game by a Ladyjack this season and is the eighth-best individual game in SFA bowling history.
After the Ladyjacks' 1,150-979 win over Prairie View A&M, SFA had a tough go of it in its final two matches of the afternoon. The Ladyjacks were edged 1,139-1,031 by 17th-ranked North Carolina A&T despite senior Kelsi Anderson (San Antonio, Texas) earning a season-best game of 255. Gill's 215 and Schwartz' 200 were not nearly enough in the final match of the day against fourth-ranked Vanderbilt, who handed SFA a 1,122-948 loss.
Schwartz finished 15th among 88 total bowlers in the individual standings with a 215 game average as Reising averaged a 205 to place 28th. Gill's 201 average ranked her 32nd in individual play. Sacred Heart University's Amanda Nardiello averaged a 231.8 Saturday to lead all bowlers, while Vanderbilt's Maria Bulanova placed second with a 226.8 game average and Jordan Richard finished third with an average of 226.
The Ladyjacks will wrap up pool play Sunday morning at 8:25 a.m. with a final traditional team match against No. 12 Sacred Heart. Bracket play will then begin at 9:50 a.m. with two best 4-of-7 Baker matches. Seeding for Sunday's bracket play will be determined by each teams' pinfall total from the first 11 matches of the tournament.
