KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – After two full rounds of play at the 2018 Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic on Kiawah Island, South Carolina, the Stephen F. Austin women's golf team finds itself tied for 17th among 43 total teams. The Ladyjacks shot a 10-over 298 in the second round on the par-72, 5,964-yard Osprey Point golf course, tying their lowest single round score this season and fifth-best in program history.
Through two rounds SFA owns a 23-over 599 and sits among the top 22 teams at the nation's largest collegiate golf tournament, which is comprised of 42 schools. The Osprey Point course averaged a score over two strokes higher than the par-72, 5,941-yard Oak Point golf course, which is where half of the event's field played for Monday's second round.
"I'm pleased with our season-low total through the first 36 holes," head coach Trey Schroeder commented after Monday's round of play. "We will build upon that tomorrow."
After shooting a career-best 3-under 69 on the Oak Point course during Sunday's opening round, sophomore Alexandra Batista (Trophy Club, Texas) continued her strong play by tallying a 1-under 71. Currently tied for fifth on the player leaderboard among 218 total golfers and ahead of nationally-ranked competitors, Batista owns a two-round total of 4-under 140. Monday's round two score is the second-best single round for Batista in her career as she has collected nine birdies through two days of play, the third-most of any golfer in the tournament.
The Ladyjacks are also getting a lot of help from redshirt junior Erica Lautensack (Arlington, Texas), who improved her first-round score by three strokes and finished with a 1-under 71 Monday. Her second-round score represents the second-lowest individual round of the season for Lautensack as she sits tied for 22nd on the player leaderboard with a two-day total of 1-over 145.
Fellow redshirt junior Jamee Jorgensen (Boerne, Texas) improved her opening round score by four strokes and climbed 18 spots on the player leaderboard with a second round score of 3-over 75 Monday. She now stands tied for 116th with a two-round total of 10-over 154. Sophomore Paola Cortes shot a 12-over 84 during Monday's second round and holds a two-round tally of 19-over 163 to be tied for 182nd, while freshman Alexis Szewczyk (McKinney, Texas) stands tied for 190th with a total score of 21-over 165 after shooting a 9-over 81 in round two.
Host College of Charleston leads the three-day, 54-hole tournament with an impressive score of 9-under 567 through the first two rounds. The Ohio Valley Conference's Murray State is second in the team standings with a 2-over 578, while Jacksonville University sits in third place with a two-day score of 3-over 579.
Jacksonville State's Valentina Giraldo sits atop the player leaderboard with a two-round score of 7-under 137 as College of Charleston's Victoria Huskey is second with a 6-under 138. Both UNC Wilmington's Lyberty Anderson and Bethune-Cookman's Mackenzie Butzer are tied for third and are one stroke ahead of Batista with scores of 5-under 139.
The third and final round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic will begin at 7:45 a.m. CT Tuesday with a shotgun start. SFA will be playing for the tournament championship at the Osprey Point course, while teams who stand 23rd-43rd will be competing for a flight championship at the Oak Point course. The Ladyjacks are paired with Navy, Presbyterian College and St. John's for Tuesday's final round. Batista will tee off from hole No. 14 while Jorgensen and Lautensack will begin on hole No. 15. Cortes will tee off from hole No. 16 and Szewczyk will start on hole No. 17.
