Ladyjacks tally 5,121 more pins, go 4-1 in five traditional team matches Saturday to move up five spots on team leaderboard
HOUSTON, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin bowling team put together a strong performance Saturday at Copperfield Bowl in Houston to move up five spots on the team leaderboard at the 2018 Stormin' Ladyjack Classic. The Ladyjacks, who finished day one of competition 2-3 and in eighth place, collected 5,121 more pins and went 4-1 in five traditional team matches to sit in third place among the highly-competitive 18-team field. SFA now owns a 6-4 record after pool play and has a pinfall total of 9,929.
Second-ranked and defending national and Stormin' Ladyjack Classic champion McKendree University leads the tournament with 10,555 pins and a 9-1 record. Top-ranked Nebraska won another five matches Saturday and is a perfect 10-0 with a pinfall total of 10,424 to sit in second place.
Through 10 matches bowled over the past two days, SFA is averaging a 198.6 per game score. After dropping its first match Saturday, the Ladyjacks knocked off 18th-ranked Duquesne, No. 11 Adelphi, 16th-ranked LIU Brooklyn and No. 20 Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Senior Morgan Reising (Lewisville, Texas) was the lone Ladyjack to bowl over a 200 in SFA's first match of the day as the Ladyjacks fell 978-921 to No. 17 North Carolina A&T. However, things would quickly change for the better with SFA going on a roll and tallying over 1,000 pins in its final four matches on day two of competition.
Senior Stephanie Schwartz (Racine, Wis.) rolled an impressive 260 against 18th-ranked Duquesne and the Ladyjacks got games of 226 from both sophomore Megan Eaglehouse (Cibolo, Texas) and freshman Sarah Gill (Attleboro, Mass.) to top Duquesne by a score of 1,087-930. The 260 by Schwartz is the third-highest individual game by the senior this season.
In its third match, SFA claimed 1,046 pins, compared to only 876 by No. 11 Adelphi, and saw Reising, Eaglehouse and Schwartz all record games over 200. Eaglehouse bowled a 237 as Reising put her name to a 230 and Schwartz rolled a 218. The momentum did not stop as the Ladyjacks bested No. 16 LIU Brooklyn by a count of 1,058 to 892. The match was SFA's best overall performance with all five Ladyjack bowlers registering a 200 or better. Freshman Dakota Faichnie (Innisfil, Ontario, Canada) recorded a 224, followed by a 213 from Eaglehouse, a 212 from Schwartz, a 209 from Reising and an even 200 by Gill.
Eaglehouse's 225 led SFA in its 1,009-985 win over 20th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater to close out the day. She was just one of three Ladyjack bowlers to roll over a 200 in the final pool play match, joining Gill's 219 and Faichnie's 204.
Schwartz knocked down a total of 1,053 pins Saturday to rank eighth on the individual leaderboard with a 210.6 per game average through five matches. Three total SFA bowlers finished in the top 25 of the individual standings as Gill placed 16th with 1,032 pins and Reising 25th with 1,008 pins. In four team matches bowled, Eaglehouse posted a pinfall of 901 and averaged an impressive 225.25 per game.
Tulane's Tiera Gulum finished at the top of the individual standings with a five-match count of 1,147, while Nebraska's Kelly Belzeski claimed 1,146 pins to place second. Nebraska's Julia Bond and McKendree's Breanna Clemmer tied for third with totals of 1,096 and 219.2 game averages.
Bracket play will get underway Sunday at 8:30 a.m. with three best 4-of-7 Baker matches.
The Ladyjacks will vie for the 2018 Stormin' Ladyjack Classic title and can finish no worse than sixth. SFA will have to get past fellow Southland Bowling League member Arkansas State in the first round of bracket play, who is seeded fourth and ranked No. 3 in the nation. Seeding was determined by teams' pinfall total through the first 10 matches of the tournament. SFA has never finished better than fourth as the host of the Stormin' Ladyjack Classic.
