Men’s Golf Moves up Leaderboard after Second Round of Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate

‘Jacks shoot an even par 288 as a team in round two, now in 19th place with a two-day score of 21-over 597
PALM DESERT, Calif. – After a challenging first round of play Friday, the Stephen F. Austin men's golf team has settled in at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, California, shooting an even par 288 in the second round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. With a two-day tally of 21-over 597 the Lumberjacks have moved up to 19th in the team standings of the ultra-competitive 23-team field, which features six teams ranked in the top 50 nationally by Golfstat.com.
SFA sits ahead of Wichita State, Southern Utah, Cal State Fullerton and South Dakota State in the three-day, 54-hole tournament. Senior Blake Stock (Hewitt, Texas), who was just outside the top 20 after the first round of play, climbed the individual leaderboard and is now tied for 18th among 135 total competitors.
Stock shot a 2-under 70 in the second round, his lowest round of golf in 2017-18, after shooting an even par Friday to own a two-round score of 2-under 142. Junior Angelo Leyvani (San Antonio, Texas) tallied an impressive 3-under 69 on the par-72, 7,322-yard course Saturday after posting an 8-over 72 in the opening round to stand tied for 68th with a two-day total of 5-over 149.
Freshman Steven Fabik (Carrollton, Texas) isn't far behind Leyvani after shooting a 1-over 73 in the second round. With a 5-over 77 in the first round, Fabik sits tied for 76th on the individual leaderboard with a two-day total of 6-over 150. Both freshman Andy Lopez (Dallas, Texas) and junior Jake Hendrix (Austin, Texas) improved their day one scores in the second round Saturday. Lopez improved his score by four strokes, shooting a 4-over 76 in round two for a two-round score of 12-over 156. He is tied for 114th, while Hendrix improved his opening round score by three strokes and shot a 7-over 79 Saturday to sit tied for 128th with a two-day total of 17-over 161. It is only Hendrix's second tournament of the 2017-18 season and first competing with the team instead of playing as an individual.
California, ranked 15th nationally, leads the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate with a two-day score of 27-under 549, shooting a 14-under 274 in the second round. Texas Tech, the No. 14 team in the nation is in second place with a two-round total of 12-under 564, while Colorado remains third after shooting a 10-under 278 in the second round to own a two-day tally of 11-under 565.
Dan Starzinski of tournament host Wyoming is leading the event as an individual competitor after tying a Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate record with an 8-under 64 second-round score. He owns a two-day score of 11-under 133, while Cal's Jamie Cheatham is in second place with a two-round total of 9-under 135. Three players are tied for third through the two rounds with a score of 8-under 136.
The third and final round will get underway Sunday at 9 a.m. CST with a double-tee start from hole No. 1 and No. 10. The 'Jacks are paired with Nebraska, Denver and Idaho for Sunday's play and will tee off from hole No. 10 beginning at 9 a.m. CST. SFA's five players will tee off every 10 min. until 9:40 a.m. CST.
