Ladyjacks announce second signee of 2019 class with addition of Spring, Texas, native Sloane Bennett
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The SFA women's golf team has added its second signee of the Ladyjacks' 2019 class with the addition of Spring, Texas, native Sloane Bennett, head coach Trey Schroeder announced Saturday morning. Bennett, a four-year letter winner at Oak Ridge High School, joins Kate Dishman as SFA's new additions to the Ladyjack golf program for the 2019-20 season and beyond.
"We are very excited that Sloane is joining our Ladyjack family," commented coach Schroeder. "She is going to bring a fiery competitiveness to the team next year with a lot of talent and a resume to back it up. We look forward to watching her succeed both on the course and in the classroom throughout her collegiate career."
After being named team MVP and claiming district 16-6A honorable mention recognition as a true freshman in 2015-16, Bennett led Oak Ridge to back-to-back third-place finishes at the district 12-6A tournament her sophomore and junior campaigns. Tying for seventh individually at districts, Bennett earned All-District 12-6A Second Team honors as a sophomore in 2016-17 while being tabbed team MVP for the second consecutive year.
Collecting her second-straight All-District 12-6A Second Team plaudit and her third-straight team MVP crown, Bennett was both a 12-6A regional qualifier and Texas Class 6A state qualifier her junior year in 2017-18. She placed eighth at regionals with back-to-back 18-hole scores of 76, before finishing 22nd at the state tournament held at the Legacy Hills Golf Club with a 77 first round and 75 second round.
In her senior season, Bennett tied for first place individually with a 73 at the Oak Ridge Varsity Fall Classic, which was held on Sept. 21 at the Gleannloch Pines Golf Club. In addition to her impressive prep career, Bennett has been successful on the Texas Junior Golf Tour (TJGT), turning in a slew of top-three finishes over the summer.
This past July, Bennett claimed tournament titles at the TJGT Summer Bash at Panther Trail (72 and 74) and the Southern Texas PGA Srixon Prestige Tour Open at Willow Creek before taking home runner-up honors at the TJGT State Match Play Invitational at Traditions (75 and 76). She also tied for first place at the TJGT Bayou Elite at the Golf Club of Houston during the month with back-to-back rounds of 73. In August, Bennett notched a second-place showing at the TJGT Match Play Invitational at Traditions and finished third at the TJGT Woodlands Championship.
The daughter of Holly and Brian Bennett, Sloane plans on majoring in business at SFA. Bennett's uncle, Jim Hicks, played baseball at both Texas A&M and Rice, while her grandfather, John Hicks, lettered in baseball at Alabama.
The Ladyjacks completed their fall schedule the last week of October and will have the rest of the fall and winter off from tournament play before returning to the links for competition this spring. The Texas State Invitational will kick off SFA's spring championship season Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 11-12 at the Plum Creek Golf Course in Kyle, Texas.
