Ladyjacks defeat Lewis University and Valparaiso on first day of play, sit in fifth place among 18-team tournament field
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Competing in their second tournament in the last eight days and over 1,000 miles away from Nacogdoches, the SFA bowling team claimed a pair of match victories on the opening day of competition at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's Warhawk Classic. The Ladyjacks earned wins over Lewis University and Valparaiso Friday afternoon inside the AMF West Lanes in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to sit in fifth place among the 18-team tournament field.
SFA, who is ranked No. 6 in the nation according to the preseason National Tenpin Coaches Association's (NTCA) poll, totaled 4,975 pins in the first five matches as second-ranked McKendree University owns the tournament lead after going 5-0 and racking up 5,388 total pins. Fellow Southland Bowling League member and fifth-ranked Arkansas State is in second place with a 4-1 record and a pinfall total of 5,256, while No. 4 Sam Houston State owns 5,217 total pins to go with a perfect 5-0 mark.
Matched up against Lewis University for their first match of the day, the Ladyjacks bowled to a score of 998, compared to an 824 by the Flyers. Opening up the tournament with a strong game of 233, SFA posted two more games of 200 in the match with a 207 game two and a 232 game three.
Following a 947-893 setback to ninth-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson, the Ladyjacks notched their second triumph of the afternoon with a 916-905 win over Valparaiso, who is receiving votes in the NTCA Top 25. SFA out-bowled its opponent in the first three games of the match, including recording a 205 in game three as Valparaiso failed to surpass 165 before the fourth game.
Despite accumulating over 1,000 pins in their final two matches of the day, the Ladyjacks were outdone by two of the top five teams in the country. SFA bowled no lower than a 180 in any of the five games and claimed 1,049 pins, but it wasn't enough to top No. 5 Arkansas State, who knocked down 1,176 pins. The Ladyjacks posted game two score of 247 against the Red Wolves, followed by a 222 and a 203. Taking on top-ranked Vanderbilt in its final match Friday, SFA improved its pinfall total with 1,119 pins, however, it wasn't enough as the Commodores collected 1,142 pins. Bowling at least a 190 in each game of the match, the Ladyjacks registered day-high games of 257 and 258 in games two and three.
The three-day Warhawk Classic will continue Saturday with five traditional team matches starting at 9:25 a.m. CST. SFA will take on tournament host and 21st-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater in its first match Saturday, followed by Elmhurst College, No. 18 Central Missouri, 19th-ranked LIU Brooklyn and No. 15 Adelphi.
Sunday, a tournament champion will be crowned with three rounds of best 4-of-7 bracket play Baker matches beginning at 8:30 a.m. Seeding for Sunday's bracket play is based on teams' pinfall total from Friday and Saturday's competition.
