Bowling Earns Trio of Wins on Day One of Competition at Track Kat Klash in Houston

Ladyjacks total 4,681 pins in five Baker matches Friday to sit in fifth place among 17-team field
HOUSTON, Texas – On day one of competition at the Track Kat Klash in Houston, the SFA bowling team claimed a trio of wins and totaled 4,681 pins in five Baker matches to stand in fifth place among the tournament's 17-team field. The Ladyjacks posted a 3-2 record Friday inside the Emerald Lanes and earned a victory over a nationally-ranked opponent.
Entering the eighth-annual event ranked No. 6 in the nation according the National Tenpin Coaches Association's (NTCA) preseason poll, SFA began the day with a convincing win over Southern University. Tallying 933 pins, compared to 806 by Southern, the Ladyjacks bowled a 192 in two of the first three games of the match and finished off the contest with games of 188 and 187. In its second match, SFA went toe-to-toe with the country's 10th-best team but was edged by just 10 pins (917-907) as the Ladyjacks out-bowled Tulane in two of the five games. SFA claimed a 190-148 game two win and bested Tulane 175-162 in game four with both squads tallying over 200 pins in the final game of the match.
Taking on the seventh-ranked team in the nation in their third match Friday, the Ladyjacks came only 23 pins shy of Maryland-Eastern Shore (944-921). A 201 game one and 212 game two gave Maryland-Eastern Shore a sizable advantage before SFA made its comeback. The Ladyjacks once again earned game wins in two of the five games, notching a 200-174 game three victory and taking game four 191-170 before being outdone 187-159 in game five.
SFA had its finest performance of the day in its fourth match against No. 22 Maryville University, totaling 979 pins and topping the Saints in four of the five games. Bowling a 200-game score on three different occasions in the match, the Ladyjacks followed up a narrow 180-177 game one win with game totals of 220, 211 and 200. Closing out the day with another impressive triumph, this time 941-877 over Prairie View A&M, SFA took three of the five games and reach the 200-pin mark twice. After a sizable 206-156 game one win, the Ladyjacks earned a close, 172-171 game two victory and bowled a whopping 232 in a 75-pin game four rout.
Maryland-Eastern Shore went 3-1 Friday and totaled 4,945 pins to own the tournament lead, while second-ranked McKendree University is in second place with 4,897 total pins and a 4-1 record. Third-ranked Nebraska sits in third place after the first day of competition, also holding a 4-1 record and owning a pinfall total of 4,845.
The Track Kat Klash will continue Saturday with five traditional team matches starting at 9:30 a.m., before bracket play determines a tournament champion Sunday with three rounds of best 4-of-7 bracket play Baker matches getting underway at 8:30 a.m. Seeding for Sunday's bracket play will be based on teams' pinfall total from Friday and Saturday's Baker and team matches.
Saturday's Matches
SFA will begins its traditional team matches Saturday against No. 3 Nebraska, before taking on fellow Southland Bowling League members Arkansas State, who is ranked fifth nationally, and Youngstown State. The Ladyjacks final two matches of the day will be against Alabama A&M and second-ranked McKendree University.
