NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Fresh off of an undefeated weekend in Preseason WNIT play inside William R. Johnson Coliseum, the Stephen F. Austin women's basketball team returns to action in the friendly confines this Tuesday with a midweek matchup with Our Lady of the Lake. The Tuesday evening bout is the first game of a doubleheader with the SFA men's basketball team, as the Lumberjacks square off with Marist to open up the 2018 BHOF Belfast Classic in the nightcap. The Ladyjacks played two games in as many days over the weekend, besting Morgan State on Friday by a 69-42 score and then rallying from a halftime deficit to beat a very good Yale team on Saturday, 67-57.
Fans can watch the Ladyjacks (2-1,0-0) on ESPN+ and the ESPN App, with the golden pipes of play-by-play man Bobby Mauro on the call. Mauro's delivery of the game's action can also be found on Q107.7 FM locally and nationwide on the TuneIn app. Live stats are available at the top of this page, and fans are encouraged to follow the Ladyjacks on Twitter (@SFA_WBB) and Instagram (@SFA_WBB) for more content during and after the game.
Tuesday's opponent out of the Red River Athletic Conference is San Antonio-based Our Lady of the Lake, a high-scoring and successful NAIA program that is in its seventh season under the guidance of Christopher Minner. Minner has compiled a 161-38 (.809) winning percentage and eight-straight 20+ win seasons. The Saints live and die by their offense, as they average 92.8 points per game on an offense that takes just under 71 shots per contest. Junior guard Kasey Saldana is one of three players who score in double-digits for OLLU, and her 21.0 points per game is buoyed by a slash line of .455/.441/.950 (FG/3Pt/FT). Of course, this added emphasis on the attack has its cost, and the Saints are allowing opponents to score 83.5 points per game on them this season.
For the Ladyjacks, the offense has been led by senior guard Chanell Hayes, who has posted a team-high 16.3 points per game and totaled 23 points in the win over Yale. Hayes has done her damage in a variety of different ways, but mostly at the three-point line, where her makes (12) and accuracy both lead the team. Imani Johnson has posted averages of 9.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per game, while junior Riley Harvey chips in 8.3 points and leads the team in rebounding with 4.3 per game. The Ladyjacks have been successful with their perimeter game this season, ranking 30thin Division ! with 9.3 three-pointers per game and a team mark of 36.4 percent from that area.
On the defensive end, the 'Jacks will look to win the battle with the high-scoring Saints by doing what they've done well in the past two contests, limiting opposing offenses. SFA is holding opponents to 60 points a game this season and is forcing 21 turnovers a game. Active hands through the roster are a hallmark of the 'Jacks defense, as an SFA player has tallied five or more steals in each of the first three games this season, and the team ranks 48thin Division I at 11.7 steals per game.
