SFA Bowling reaches title match Sunday, defeats No. 4 Sam Houston State 4-1
HARAHAN, La. – In its first tournament of the 2018-19 NCAA bowling season, the sixth-ranked Stephen F. Austin bowling team captured a runner-up finish at the 2018 Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational in Harahan, Louisiana. The second-seeded Ladyjacks reached the title match of the 14-team tournament held inside the Colonial Lanes after upending top-seeded and fourth-ranked Sam Houston State 4-1 in the opening round of bracket play.
It marks the second time in the last three years SFA has claimed second place at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational after finishing third a year ago and earning runner-up honors in 2016.
Taking on the fellow Southland Bowling League member Bearkats for the third time of the weekend, the Ladyjacks earned their second-straight win against the nation's fourth-best team. Bowling three consecutive 200-pin games of 203, 235 and 208 to take a 3-0 lead, SFA recovered from a 223-155 game four setback by rolling an impressive 258 in the fifth game of the match to secure a spot in the tournament's title match.
Matching up against Florida A&M in the second match of bracket play with no bearing on the following round, the Ladyjacks claimed a 4-0 sweep after tallying a 223 in the opening game and a 190 in game two
Taking on fourth-seeded and 17th-ranked Louisiana Tech, who defeated tournament host and 10th-ranked Tulane (4.5-1.5) and Sam Houston State (4-0), for the championship, SFA found themselves trailing 2-0 after the first two games went the way of the Lady Techsters. After game three ended in a 179-179 tie, Louisiana Tech built a 3.5-.5 lead with a 207-192 game four win. From there, the Ladyjacks made their comeback, taking games five-seven by scores of 173-167, 162-161 and 218-171. Knotted up at 3.5-3.5, the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational's title hinged on a five-frame roll off. The Lady Techsters would prevail by a mere 11 pins (129-118) in the additional five frames.
All five of SFA's starting bowlers finished among the top 22 of 98 total competitors following Saturday's five traditional team matches. Both seniors Dakotah Hazlewood and Paige Beeney were named to the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational All-Tournament Team after each finished in the top five of the individual standings Saturday. Hazlewood placed second with a 203.4 game average, while Beeney was fifth with a 195.2 average.
The Ladyjacks completed the weekend with an 8-5 record and claimed a pinfall total of 12,351 in 13 matches bowled.
