Ljubic Advances to Consolation Quarters at ITA Regionals, Carvalho and Misak Make Consolation Round of 16

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - SFA senior Kaja Ljubic bounced back from an opening round loss by posting back-to-back wins in the consolation bracket and will move on to the quarterfinal round at the ITA Texas Regionals hosted by Texas A&M.
Ljubic, a native of Ljubljana, Slovenia, dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Sam Houston State's Roos Gerritsen on the opening day of the regional tournament but did not let that decision deter her. After getting by Prairie View A&M's Neharika Rama by default, Ljubic posted a 6-4, 7-5 victory over SMU's Emma Pieroni to punch her ticket to the round of eight.
Elsewhere, sophomore Vera Carvalho also recovered from an opening round loss and posted a win in the consolation singles bracket. Carvalho defeated Prairie View A&M's Jimena Duran Castellanos 6-2, 7-5 to move on to the round of 16. Carvalho will take on Sam Houston State's Lusine Chobanyan at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning with a trip to the round of eight on the line.
Redshirt freshman Kyndall Misak also moved on in the singles consolation bracket with a default victory over Prairie View A&M's Jessica Lackey and will battle Texas State's Josefina Cassara at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. The victor of that match will take on Ljubic, setting up the possibility of an all-SFA round of eight match.
In doubles action, Armelle Cerdan and Darinka Tiboldi captured a 6-1 victory over UTRGV's Katarina Sasaroga and Doris Aleksovska in the opening round but were knocked out of the doubles bracket with a 6-0 loss to the Texas duo of Katie Poluta and Fernanda Labraña.
Each of the remaining matches of the ITA Texas Regionals will take place at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M. Admission is free, and Carvalho and Misak will begin competition at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
