MONTERREY, Mexico – The Stephen F. Austin bowling program was well represented internationally last week at the 2017 Pan American Confederation Youth Championship as senior Stephanie Schwartz led the United States Bowling Congress' Junior Team USA with four gold medals. Competing for Junior Team USA at Bol Obispado in Monterrey, Mexico, Sept. 2-9, Schwartz captured gold medals in singles, doubles, trios and all-events, claiming four of the squad's 11 total medals.
"It felt really good to win gold for the first time, and it means the world to be able to do it in my final year on Junior Team USA," said Schwartz, who helped the Ladyjacks earn the NCAA women's bowling national title in 2016. "I tried to stay calm, make great shots and knew my teammates were there to support me no matter what. I will always remember this moment, but I hope to have more opportunities to compete on the adult team in the future. I'm really grateful for all of the opportunities I've had in this program."
Leading Junior Team USA to a bronze medal in team competition, all three of Schwartz' 21-and-under division teammates were fellow collegiate bowlers, including Breanna Clemmer of McKendree University, Sydney Brummett of Wichita State and Julia Bond of the University of Nebraska.
In singles play, the three-time National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) All-American First Team selection averaged a 214.67 score in six games to win the individual championship. Schwartz bowled an event-high 241 in the opening game and finished with a leading point total of 1,288. She then teamed up with McKendree's Clemmer to take home gold in doubles competition, bowling a 1,315 in six games for a 219.17 average. The pair's 221.92 average outpaced the next closest doubles team by over 23 pins.
Wichita State's Brummett and Clemmer joined Schwartz for the trio event as the three claimed the title with a 208.06 average in six games, nearly 17 points and over 300 total pins higher than second-place Costa Rica. In team competition, Schwartz led the foursome with a high score of 1,273 and a 212.17 average, aiding the United States to a bronze medal with a total pin count of 4,577.
Schwartz' showing in the singles, doubles, trios and team competitions earned her a gold medal in the all-events as the rising senior totaled a score of 5,080, averaging a 211.67 in 24 total games bowled. She also tied for bronze with Columbia's Isabella Correa in the Masters event to complete the championships with a total medal count of six. With her dominating performance, Schwartz was the only player in either the boys or girls U21 division to medal in every event.
A native of Racine, Wis. (Washington Park H.S.), Schwartz had represented the United States four other times as a member of Junior Team USA, competing at the 2014 and 2016 World Bowling Youth Championships and the 2015 PABCON Youth Championships. Schwartz took home a total of five medals in those competitions but had not struck gold until last week.
"This was probably one, if not the most experienced teams we've ever brought to an international youth competition," remarked Junior Team USA head coach Bryan O'Keefe. "We were looking for great things from them this week, and they did not disappoint. They put together a pretty dominating effort, and even though team event didn't go the way we wanted, we're very happy with everyone's performance."
The Ladyjacks will begin tournament play later on this fall with the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invite in New Orleans, La., Friday-Sunday, Oct. 20-22. Stay tuned to SFAJacks.com for up to date information on all things related to SFA bowling.
