Two RBI Double from Lewis Gives SFA Win over UCA, 5-2

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Softball team faced off against Central Arkansas for the last of their three-game series on Saturday afternoon at the Farris Field. As per the trend of the other games against the Bears, SFA put up the first run of the game in the first inning after some small ball in the first frame. Central Arkansas fought back in the bottom of the frame, putting up two runs. Freshman Kiriany Hornberger earned the RBI sacrifice hit in the second to tie the game a two apiece in the second inning.
Things would stay locked at 2-2 through the next five inning forcing the extra eighth inning. That’s when Lewis went to work allowing sophomore Karli Herron to tag the go-ahead run. Junior Autumn Holloway then added the insurance run by bringing Lewis in.
Lewis lead the Ladyjacks at the plate going 2-for-4 one the day, hitting two RBI, and tagging a run. Freshman Brittany Crawford also went .500 at the plate with two hits off four appearances. She had one of SFA’s five runs. Freshman Katie Clark battled for one hit off three appearances and tagged in a run. Hornerberger, who has dominated at the top of the batting order, was 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run. Junior Autumn Holloway earned two RBI after a hit and a sacrifice fly. Herron pinch hit late in the game, going a perfect 1-for-1 at the plate and tagged SFA’s winning run.
A lead-off single from Hornberger followed by two singles, rounded Clark to third base with only one out. Holloway then slapped one to the pitcher for the sacrifice RBI that allowed Clark to score.
The Bears would steal the lead from the Ladyjacks, 2-1,in the bottom of the frame from a double and a sacrifice fly. However, a two-out strike out from Guffey stopped the Bears in their tracks.
In the second inning, Crawford led the Ladyjacks off with a single, and then advanced to third on a throwing error. Crawford then reached home for the tying run on a ground out to second base.
It would take extra innings for SFA to unknot things from UCA. The two RBI double from Lewis brought home Herron and Hornberger, who reached in a fielding error. Holloway then brought Lewis in with a single up the middle for the insurance run that gave SFA the 5-2 win.
Callee Guffey takes the win, pitching a complete eight inning game, and moves to 7-8 on the year. She faced 31 batters, scattering eight hits and striking out six.
SFA will return home for a seven-game home stand starting with their last midweek matchup against the University of Houston. The Cougars come into town Tuesday, April 11th at 5:00 p.m.
