Lumberjacks at SLC Championship
SFA makes a return trip to McKinney looking to build on last season’s fifth-place showing at the Southland Conference Championships. This week’s trip marks the 30th anniversary of the Lumberjacks making their initial trip to the Southland Championships as SFA has placed in the top-10 in each of its previous 29 trips. The ‘Jacks have finished among the top-five 17 times, including capturing the conference title in 1988, 1991 and 1999 while registering runner-up finishes in 1990 and 1993.
Last Time Out
SFA battled a 12-team field, as well as Mother Nature, finishing seventh at the Jim West Intercollegiate in Bastrop on April 11th. The Lumberjacks carded a 4-over 580 through the first two rounds and sat just four strokes out of third place but were unable to make their run over the final 18 holes as rain and lightning canceled the final round. The shortened tournament did give sophomore Angelo Leyvani a runner-up finish following his 5-under 139 over the first two rounds while senior Major Monzingo tied for 17th with a 1-over 145.
Watching the Record Book
Heading into this week’s SLC Championship, a number of marks in the Lumberjack record book are up for grabs. Senior Major Monzingo currently boasts a 72.82 scoring average in 2016-17, which ranks second all-time in program history and is within striking distance of Mitchell McLeroy’s program-best 72.65 average in 2011-12. Sophomore Angelo Leyani’s 73.36 average on the year also ranks among the top-10, sitting seventh currently, while Monzingo’s 12 par-or-better rounds and Leyvani’s 10 rank tied for fifth and 10th all-time, respectively.
