Ladyjacks Drop Non-Conference Contest at Houston 5-2

HOUSTON - The final non-conference road match of Stephen F. Austin women’s tennis team’s regular season resulted in a 5-2 loss for the Ladyjacks when they battled Houston at the Barbara Winston Wallace Tennis Facility Thursday afternoon.
The Ladyjacks’ only two team points of the non-conference match came in the fifth and sixth singles flights. Liza Aginskaya and Kaja Ljubic each won by default as the Cougars did not have enough available players to fill up all six singles flights and did not put a player up against either SFA sophomore.
Needing only one win in doubles play to secure the team point since the Cougars were competing with just four student-athletes, the Ladyjacks dropped both of the remaining two doubles matches to start the day. Denise Maxl and Gabi Guilarte wound up on the wrong end of a 7-5 score in the number-one doubles flight against Sveva Mazzari and Lauren Alter which gave the Cougars the doubles point.
Still, SFA remained ahead 2-1 thanks to the pair of automatic point received by the two Cougar forfeits. Unfortunately, Darinka Tiboldi and Maxl both fell in two sets to Ana Glumac and Mazzari respectively and that handed Houston a 3-2 lead.
Needing a singles win to keep their hopes for a team victory alive, the Ladyjacks instead saw Siân Payne come on on the wrong end of a 6-2, 6-4 result against Constanden Nicolaou in the number-four singles flight that sealed the match for Houston.
Guliarte tied her match with Alter at number-two singles at 1-1 with her 6-4 win in the second set, but Alter responded with a 10-3 triumph in the third to finish the match.
In their final home appearance of 2017, the Ladyjacks host Central Arkansas for a Southland Conference match at 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning. The match will also be the final home match in the collegiate career of Maxl and SFA’s lone senior will be recognized in a brief senior day ceremony prior to the start of the match.
