Stephen F. Austin’s busy March continues with a trip to deep South Texas, competing in the 2017 Border Olympics on Friday and Saturday, March 10-11, at the Laredo Country Club.
Tournament Information
Hosted by the University of Houston, the 2017 Border Olympics will be a 54-hole event, being played at the Laredo Country Club in Laredo, a par-72 course measuring 7,125 yards. The teams will play 36 holes on Friday, March 10, followed by an 18-hole final round on Saturday, March 11, beginning with a shotgun start each day.
Participating Teams
19 teams will comprise a challenging field in Laredo this weekend with 18 of the 19 competitors ranking among the top-200 in the latest Golfstat rankings. Six teams currently boast top-100 rankings, including Houston (No. 52), UTEP (No. 55), Campbell (No. 76), McNeese (No. 84), Louisiana-Monroe (No. 93) and Rice (No. 97). An additional eight others are ranked between 100 and 150, comprised of UT-San Antonio (No. 103), Louisiana (No. 106), Sam Houston State (No. 110), Sacramento State (No. 114), Lamar (No. 117), Little Rock (No. 119), Nebraska (No. 131) and New Mexico State (No. 147). SFA, which ranks 153 in the latest standings is one of five Southland Conference schools among the field, joined by the Cowboys, Bearkats, Cardinals and Houston Baptist, with Bowling Green, Texas State and Oral Roberts rounding out the field.

Head coach Trey Schroeder’s lineup in Laredo this weekend is comprised of two seniors, a junior, a sophomore and a freshman as SFA seeks its sixth top-10 finish of the 2016-17 season.

Lumberjacks at the Border Olympics
The trip to Laredo has become a yearly staple for SFA as the Lumberjacks will be making the trip to South Texas for the fifth time in the last six seasons. The ‘Jacks finished 14th in last year’s weather-shortened event as senior Luke Sheehan tied for 19th overall with a 2-under 142. SFA’s best result at the event was a ninth-place finish in 2013 as the ‘Jacks tied for 12th in 2014, finishing 16th in 2012.
Stock, Monzingo Finish One-Two at Colin Montgomerie Invitational
Stephen F. Austin finished one-two in the individual standings at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational on February 28th as junior Blake Stock captured the individual title with senior Major Monzingo finishing second overall. Stock posted a 6-under 210 for the event, one shot better than Monzingo’s 5-under 211, as the duo both posted new career-bests in Spring. It was the first individual champion for the Lumberjacks since Blake Pugh’s win at the 2015 Jim West Intercollegiate as Stock joins senior Baxter Ward as current Lumberjacks with tournament wins. The effort helped lead SFA to a third-place finish among the 13-team field, posting an 11-over 875.
Monzingo Captures Southland Conference Golfer of the Month Honors
Stephen F. Austin senior Major Monzingo earned Southland Conference Golfer of the Month honors for February, continuing a strong senior season. Monzingo registering a 72.17 scoring average in a pair of tournaments during the month, placing second at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational with a career-low 5-under 211 to help lead the Lumberjacks to a third-place finish. He opened the month with a 6-over 222 at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, leading SFA in the tournament in the desert. Monzingo registered a pair of sub-par rounds, including tying his career-low with a 5-under 67 at the event in Houston. Monzingo has been SFA’s top performer through the 2016-17 season, leading the Lumberjacks with a 73.00 scoring average through 18 rounds, including eight rounds of par-or-better with three top-10 finishes.
Looking Ahead
Stephen F. Austin continues its busy March, heading straight from south Texas to the DFW Metroplex for the 2017 TPC Four Seasons Invitational. Hosted by Oral Roberts, the Lumberjacks will compete at the Las Colinas Country Club, getting underway Tuesday, March 14 before wrapping up Thursday, March 16.
