ARLINGTON, Texas – Stephen F. Austin went to Arlington on Wednesday for a midweek single game against UT Arlington at the Allan Saxe Field. The Mavericks struck early, putting up three runs in the first inning, and then tacked on another three by the end of the sixth. SFA tried to get their offensive going through their three scattered hits, but UTA covered all the opportunities SFA had.
Freshman Kiriany Hornberger had two of SFA’s three hits. She went 2-for-3 on the day. The other hit was a single by sophomore Emily Wolfe. She was 1-for-3 at the plate. The other two offensive attacks were by senior Brittany Lewis, who was walked twice, as well as, junior Tanna Huie, who was also walked twice. The Ladyjacks had two close scoring opportunities throughout the game, but could not advance anyone past the hot corner.
Junior Halie Vance started in the circle for the Ladyjacks and was given the loss after pitching 4.0 innings. Vance gave up four runs and five hits from the 19 batters she faced. Freshman Jordan Llinas relieved her in the fifth and pitched a total of 2.0 innings. Llinas allowed two runs and scattered three hits from nine batters. Vance’s record falls to 1-5 on the season.
The Ladyjacks opened the first inning with a quick three and out, and then UTA took advantage of SFA’s new shape in the field and was in the scoring position after an error at second. A wild pitch brought in the second run, and a safely hit double saw UTA have the three run edge at the end of the first.
Wolfe hit her one out single in the top of the third, but she would be replaced by sophomore Lauren Becker on a fielder’s choice. A strike out looking would end the opportunity for SFA.
Two more fielding errors and another UTA run would force SFA to change field personnel, putting junior Amber Landry at catcher, Becker at third base, Holloway at second, and freshman Brittany Crawford in right field. The Ladyjacks also then sent Llinas in the circle. The squad went to work cutting UTA’s fifth inning short with two fly-out and a great caught-stealing from the arm of Landry.
The sixth inning brought about SFA biggest scoring opportunity with Lewis moving to third after being walked, and Hornberger slamming a single to right field. Huie would then battle for a free pass, which loaded the bases for the Ladyjacks. All three were unfortunately left on base after a two-out grounder ended the attack.
The Mavericks would get the finally say posting two more runs in the bottom sixth, closing it at 6-0.
SFA will be back at home for a weekend series against conference opponent Nicholls starting Friday, March 17. First pitch on Friday is at 3:00 p.m., and then two game will follow on Saturday, starting at 1:00 p.m. The game will be streamed via Facebook Live on the SFA Softball Facebook page.
