SAN ANTONIO, Texas - One day after securing a road win by getting strong play in singles action, the Stephen F. Austin women’s tennis team could not overcome UTSA strong team singles action and fell 6-1 to the Roadrunners at the UTSA Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Liza Aginskaya was responsible for producing the Ladyjacks’ lone point of the afternoon. In number six singles play, Aginskaya defeated Kylee Kato 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (10-4).
At no point did the Ladyjacks hold the lead, but with the exception of Vanesa Pardo’s 6-4, 6-1 loss at number four singles none of the one-on-one matches had a large margin of victory. Darinka Tiboldi nearly forced a third set in her fourth-flight match with Laura Cabrera before ultimately falling 6-4, 7-6 (9-7).
Lauren Hidalgo-Smith took Denisa Ibrahimovic to seven games in the number-two singles match and senior Denise Maxl put forth a strong effort against Miriam Rosell Canudas in number-one singles action. Rosell Canudas, the 118th-ranked singles player on the ITA list, earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Maxl.
Gabi Guilarts fell 6-4, 6-3 to Charleen Tiwari in the fifth singles match, but did take part in the closest doubles match of the day while teamed with Siân Payne. The tandem was behind the UTSA team of Ibrahimovic and Sonia Madroñal Medina 4-3 before the remaining two UTSA doubles teams finished up their matches to give the Roadrunners the doubles point.
Continuing their stretch of six matches in a row away from Nacogdoches, the Ladyjacks will travel to UT Arlington on Friday to take on the Mavericks at 2:00 p.m.
