In partnership with NCAA leadership development and with the American Football Coaches Foundation's involvement, the AFCA created the 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute as a professional development and networking opportunity for football coaches. Held in conjunction with the AFCA Convention (Jan. 7-10), the 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute, formerly the Future Football Coaches Academy, is designed to identify and develop rising premier, future leaders in the game of football and the coaching profession. At the one-day event, Brown will take part in interactive lectures on topics that include ethics, leadership, NCAA rules, financial management, the coach hiring practice and student-athlete safety.
Selected from a pool of 138 applicants, Brown is one of 20 participants who will be provided a $1,000 stipend from the NCAA to assist with expenses incurred while attending the AFCA Convention. He will also be published in the bi-monthly AFCA magazine or have his article added to the AFCA Educational Library, in addition to being placed on the 2019 AFCA Foundation Committee.
Brown just completed his first season coaching the Lumberjacks' running back corps after arriving in Nacogdoches in January 2016. He came to SFA after spending three seasons at TCU, serving as the Horned Frogs' director of high school relations in 2016 and working as a graduate assistant for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Continuing to work with TCU's wide receivers throughout the 2016 season, Brown primarily served as an inside wide receivers coach as a graduate assistant. The Horned Frogs posted a record of 23-3 in Brown's first two years at TCU, capturing the 2014 Big 12 championship and earning victories in both the 2014 Peach Bowl and the 2016 Alamo Bowl. During his time in Fort Worth, Brown helped coach seven players who made NFL rosters following their collegiate careers as TCU ranked in the top five in the nation in total offense.
This past season at SFA, Brown was instrumental in leading senior running back Kijana Amous to gain 983 all-purpose yards for the most in a single season since 2014. He helped Amous finish 2017 with 639 rushing yards, including 471 in his final five games of the season.
Prior to joining the collegiate ranks, Brown coached at several high schools in Texas. He served as a defensive line coach at Arlington Martin High School, a wide receivers coach at Lake Travis (Austin) High School and a safeties and special teams coach at Midlothian High School. During his time coaching at the high school level, Brown worked with a number of Division I players, including Oklahoma starting quarterback and 2017 Heisman Trophy favorite Baker Mayfield (Lake Travis) and former Texas A&M defensive end standout Myles Garrett (Arlington Martin).
Originally from Ennis, Texas, Brown graduated with his bachelor's degree from North Texas in 2009.
To apply for the 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute, Brown had to submit his resume, five references and a 1,600-word article on either offense, defense, special teams or a specific position this past summer.
