HOUSTON, Texas – Through two days of play at Sam Houston State's Track Kat Klash, the Stephen F. Austin bowling team sits in sixth place among the 21-team field with a 4-5 record. The Ladyjacks went 2-2 Saturday at the Emerald Lanes in Houston and collected over 1,000 pins during their bye match to secure the sixth seed for Sunday's bracket play.
With a pinfall total of 9,495 and a game average of 189.9 over the past two days, SFA will have a chance to finish third in the loaded tournament Sunday. Second-ranked Nebraska is in the lead and heads into tomorrow's bracket play as the top seed with an 8-2 record and a 9,988 pinfall total. Top-ranked McKendree University will be the No. 2 seed after posting a 6-3 record and collecting 9,795 pins Friday and Saturday, while No. 3 Arkansas is third with a 7-3 mark and a pinfall count of 9,685.
Just like Friday's start, the Ladyjacks began the day with a pair of losses against nationally-ranked teams. Facing No. 1 McKendree, SFA was outdone 970 to 942 as Stephanie Schwartz (Racine, Wis.) was the only player to record a 200. In the second match of the day, the Ladyjacks were defeated 1,002-861 by 18th-ranked North Carolina A&T.
Three different bowlers claimed scores of over 200 in the third match as SFA cruised to a 927-813 victory over Alabama State. Freshman Sarah Gill (Attleboro, Mass.) bowled a 202 as both Schwartz and junior Paige Beeney (Salado, Texas) registered game scores of 204. Having a bye match and bowling without an opponent, the Ladyjacks posted their highest pinfall total of the day with a 1,012. Gill bowled her second consecutive 200 game with a 212, while Schwartz earned a day-high 236 and freshman Dakota Faichnie (Innisfil, Ontario, Canada) chipped in a 199.
SFA rounded out the day with a 924-854 win over Southern University out of the Southwestern Athletic Conference as Gill grabbed her third-straight game of over 200 with a 201.
Both Schwartz and Gill finished off the day among the top-20 bowlers at the event. Schwartz averaged a 200.20 for 16th out of 158 total competitors, while Gill placed 19th with a 197.40 average. Senior Morgan Reising (Lewisville, Texas) finished 54th after averaging 177.60 through the five matches. Arkansas State's Leah Glazer averaged a 248.20 Saturday to sit atop the individual leaders as Nebraska's Meghan Straub was second with a 218.20 average and the Red Wolves' Jordan Richard third at 216.60 pins per game.
In a bowling version of the Battle of the Piney Woods the Ladyjacks take on fifth-ranked and No. 5 seed Sam Houston State for the opening round of bracket play Sunday morning. Should SFA win, the Ladyjacks will then face the loser of No. 3 seed Arkansas State and seventh-ranked Maryland Eastern Shore. Sunday's bracket play will begin at 8:20 a.m. as SFA will compete in three best 4-of-7 Baker matches to conclude the tournament.
