SFA goes 2-3 in team matches Saturday, head into Sunday’s bracket play as No. 9 seed
KENOSHA, Wis. – After a 1-4 day one start to NCAA Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater's Warhawk Classic in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Friday, the Stephen F. Austin bowling team went 2-3 in traditional team matches Saturday. With 4,714 pins collected on Saturday and a total pinfall of 9,462 through two days of competition at the Sheridan Lanes, the Ladyjacks go into Sunday's bracket play as the No. 9 seed in the loaded 20-team tournament.
Second-ranked Nebraska holds the lead at Warhawk Classic with a perfect 10-0 record and 10,440 total pins. Fellow Southland Bowling League member and third-ranked Arkansas State (10,294) is second with a 7-3 mark, closely followed by fourth-ranked Vanderbilt (10,290), who has also posted a 7-3 record.
SFA started the day out with a 2-1 record with wins over Lincoln University (Mo.) and ninth-ranked Sacred Heart but fell in their final two matches of day.
Opening up with a 980-932 loss to 15th-ranked Adelphi, both freshmen Dakota Faichnie (Innisfil, Ontario, Canada) and Sarah Gill (Attleboro, Mass.) registered 200-pin games in the match with Faichnie right at 200 and Gill at 201. The Ladyjacks rebounded with a resounding 975-781 victory over Lincoln University (Mo.) as Gill recorded her second-straight 200 game with a 204 and senior Stephanie Schwartz (Racine, Wis.) poured in a 235.
In match three Saturday, SFA claimed its highest pinfall of the day with a dominant 1,040-985 win over ninth-ranked Sacred Heart. Freshman Sarah Voiers (Chesterton, Ind.) bowled a career-high 267 in the match to become just the ninth Ladyjack to ever bowl over a 260 or better, while Gill (204) made it three consecutive games with at least a 200 score.
After back-to-back wins, eighth-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson and No. 10 Central Missouri handed SFA two losses to close out the day. The Ladyjacks dropped a 984-849 decision to the Knights before being defeated by 67 pins (985-918) in the final match of the day versus Central Missouri. Schwartz was the lone bowler to claim a game score of 200 in either of the two matches as she rolled a 206 against Fairleigh Dickinson.
A pair of SFA bowlers ranked in the top 25 of the individual standings after the traditional team matches. Schwartz finished 24th after claiming 1,002 total pins and averaging a game score of 200.4 and Voiers finished 25th with a 998 total and a 199.6 average. Gill was the Ladyjacks' third-highest bowler in 45th place with a total count of 944 and an average of 188.8.
Vanderbilt's Maria Bulanova led the way with 1,179 total pins and averaging 235.8 per game. Julia Bond from Nebraska came in second with a 234.8 average and a 1,174 total as Arkansas State's Jordan Richard claimed 1,144 pins for an average of 228.8 in the five games to place third.
As the ninth-seed in bracket play, SFA will face 10th-seeded Maryville University for a shot at seventh place. The Ladyjacks will play a total of three best 4-of-7 Baker matches Sunday, starting at 8:30 a.m. Should SFA win its opening match, the Ladyjacks will take on the loser of No. 7 seed Saint Francis (Pa.) and eighth-seeded Central Missouri.
