Ladyjacks post 5-0 record on day one of play in Illinois, tally 4,995 total pins to sit in second place at McKendree University’s Brunswick Bearcat Open
FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Stephen F. Austin bowling team took down three ranked opponents Friday at the Brunswick Bearcat Open in Fairview Heights, Illinois, and compiled a 5-0 record on day one of play. The Ladyjacks sit in second place in the 23-team field after knocking down a total of 4,995 pins and averaging a game score of 199.8. SFA is one of just four teams who went unscathed Friday.
Hosted by defending national champion and top-ranked McKendree University (NCAA Division II) at the St. Clair Bowl, No. 2 Nebraska leads after day one of competition with a pinfall total of 5,010 and a 200.4 game average. Joining the Ladyjacks in the unbeaten ranks are No. 1 McKendree, No. 5 Sam Houston State and No. 4 Vanderbilt, who lie in third, fourth and fifth place respectively.
Playing five, five-game Baker matches, SFA opened up the day by registering a 15-pin win (966-951) over 14th-ranked Saint Francis University (Pa.). The lineup of true freshman Dakota Faichnie (Innisfil, Ontario, Canada), junior Morgan Reising (Lewisville, Texas), freshmen Sarah Voiers (Chesterton, Ind.) and Sarah Gill (Attleboro, Mass.), and senior Stephanie Schwartz (Racine, Wis.) claimed the first four games of the match by scores of 183-164, 194-140, 221-213, 198-193. Leading by 86 pins heading into the final game, a 71-pin loss (241-170) in the final game still gave the Ladyjacks the opening-match win.
Despite trailing after the first two games, SFA came back to top eighth-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson 971-898 in its second match. Going with the same lineup but switching Gill and Voiers' order and later getting help from senior Kelsi Anderson (San Antonio, Texas), the Ladyjacks were able to dismiss a 32-pin deficit and claim the final three games of the match. Bowling a 224, 189 and and 234 in the final three games, SFA routed the Knights by 54 pins in the fifth game. The Ladyjacks faced their third ranked opponent of the day in No. 19 UAB but came away with another match victory, this time by a tally of 973-870. Changing up the starters to Faichnie, Reising, Anderson, Voiers and Schwartz, SFA rebounded from a 193-192 opening-game loss with dominant 222-181 and 171-153 game two and game three wins. After being edged 180-175 in the fourth, the Ladyjacks grabbed the fifth game by 40 pins (203-163) to move to 3-0 on the day.
SFA's third and fourth opponents of the day proved to be no match for the Ladyjacks, who claimed the final 10 games in comfortable fashion. Continuing with its same lineup of Faichnie, Reising, Anderson, Voiers and Schwartz in the final two matches, SFA powered past NCAA Division III Aurora University 1,081-742. No game was closer than within 52 pins as the Ladyjacks totaled a day-high score of 236 in the fifth game. Despite a 179-175 game-one win and a 153-144 game-five victory, SFA rolled 1,004-803 over NCAA Division II Drury University in the final match of the day and claimed scores of 217, 235 and 220 in the middle three games.
The Brunswick Bearcat Open continues Saturday with five traditional team matches starting at 9:30 a.m. Following Saturday's matches, teams will be seeded for bracket play based on total pinfall through the first two days. Bracket play will conclude the tournament Sunday with three best 4-of-7 Baker matches.
