KENNER, La. – Day two of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational in Kenner, Louisiana, saw the Stephen F. Austin bowling team post a 3-2 record in traditional team matches as the Ladyjacks earned the No. 2 seed for Sunday's bracket play. Earning victories over fellow Southland Bowling League member Valparaiso, 19th-ranked Tulane and the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Florida A&M, SFA knocked down a total of 5,211 pins Saturday to sit in second place in the 14-team field with an 8-2 record in the tournament.
Owning a pinfall total of 10,477 through two days of play, the fifth-ranked Ladyjacks head into bracket play 85 pins shy of tournament-leader and league foe Sam Houston State (10,562). Earning the third seed for Sunday's bracket play is Tulane after going 7-3 over the last two days and earning a total of 10,380 pins.
In the opening match of the day, SFA bested Valparaiso by a count of 1,041 to 931 after getting a team-best 278 from senior Stephanie Schwartz (Racine, Wis.). It would be the highest score by any Ladyjack for the remainder of the day. Following its early victory, SFA topped No. 19 UAB by a score of 1,140 to 1,103 as four different bowlers tossed games over 200 for the team's highest match total of the day. Schwartz posted a 255, while junior Dakotah Hazlewood (Capron, Ill.) bowled a 249 and true freshman Sarah Gill (Attleboro, Mass.) bowled a 226. Fellow true freshman Sarah Voiers (Chesterton, Ind.) claimed a 217 in the match against UAB as sophomore Megan Eaglehouse (Cibolo, Texas) rounded out the scoring five with a 193.
Led by Hazlewood's 210 score in the third match Saturday, the Ladyjacks were outdone by No. 17 and tournament host Tulane (1,025-925). SFA rebounded with a 970-950 victory over Florida A&M with true freshman Dakota Faichnie (Innisfil, Ont., Canada) bowling her first full game for the Purple and White.
In the positional round Saturday, the Ladyjacks were edged by just 12 pins against fifth-ranked Sam Houston State, falling 1,147-1,135. The second Battle of the Piney Woods of the weekend saw all five SFA bowlers reach the 200 mark but it wasn't enough. Schwartz registered a 257, followed by a 227 from Faichnie, a 221 by Gill, a 218 from Voiers and a 212 courtesy of Hazlewood. The Bearkats got a huge boost from Madysen Keller in the match, who earned first perfect game in school history with a 300.
The Ladyjacks are averaging a 209.5 per game through 10 matches at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational as Schwartz led all bowlers Saturday with a 245.60 average. Gill averaged a 216.20 on day two for the seventh-highest average, while Hazlewood's 205.60 ranks her 16th.
A maximum of three best 4-of-7 Baker matches await SFA Sunday with the Ladyjacks slated to matchup with No. 5 Sam Houston State in the first round. Getting underway at 8:30 a.m. from the AMF All Star Lanes, the winner between the top two seeds will automatically advance to the finals with the loser still advancing to the second round.
