The Ladyjacks to host intra-squad scrimmage Sunday afternoon at Texas Pro Bowl in Nacogdoches prior to the start of their fall season
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Just under a week before its fall tournament opener, the Stephen F. Austin women's bowling team will host a purple and white intra-squad scrimmage Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. at Texas Pro Bowl in Nacogdoches. The Ladyjacks are gearing up for their 2017-18 campaign as the scrimmage will serve as one final preseason preparation, providing a competition-like atmosphere.
The 2016 NCAA national champions enter the fall campaign ranked No. 6 according to the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) Preseason Poll after ending last year seventh in the nation. Led by seventh-year head coach Amber Lemke, SFA is poised for another strong run as a national title contender. The Ladyjacks welcome back a total of seven letter winners from 2016-17, including three-time NTCA All-American First Team honoree senior Stephanie Schwartz (Racine, Wis.), who recently claimed four gold medals at the Pan American Confederation Youth Championship for USBC Junior Team USA.
Also returning for SFA are seniors Kelsi Anderson (San Antonio, Texas) and Morgan Reising (Lewisville, Texas), in addition to juniors Paige Beeney (Salado, Texas) and Dakotah Hazlewood (Capron, Ill.). Along with the five upperclassmen, the Ladyjacks bring back sophomores Megan Eaglehouse (Cibolo, Texas) and Amber Whitcomb (Austin, Texas). A total of four true freshmen will take to the lanes for SFA this season with newcomers Dakota Faichnie (Innisfil, Ontairo, Canada), Sarah Gill (Attleboro, Mass.), Annie Leihardt (Georgetown, Texas) and Sarah Voiers (Chesterton, Ind.).
The Ladyjacks are coming off of a 2016-17 campaign in which they reached bracket play of the NCAA Championship before bowing out with a pair of 4-3 losses. SFA also posted its best finish at the USBC (United States Bowling Congress) Intercollegiate Team Championships since 2012, reaching the semifinals of the national tournament. It was the third top-four finish for the Ladyjacks at a national tournament in the last three seasons after capturing the 2016 NCAA national title and finishing as runner-up at the 2015 NCAA Championship.
SFA will begin its fall slate of tournaments next weekend in New Orleans, Louisiana, at Tulane's Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invite. The three-day tournament will run Friday-Sunday, Oct. 20-22, at the All Star Lanes in Kenner, Louisiana. It will be the first of four consecutive tournaments for the Ladyjacks as SFA will compete four weekends in a row.
Following the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invite, SFA will head to Lebanon, Illinois, for the Brunswick Bearcat Open hosted by reigning NCAA champion McKendree University Friday-Sunday, Oct. 27-29. The following weekend, the Ladyjacks are back in action at Sam Houston State's Track Kat Klash Friday-Sunday, Nov. 3-5 in Houston, Texas. SFA will wrap up its fall portion of the 2017-18 schedule Thursday-Sunday, Nov. 9-12, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, at the Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawk Classic. The Ladyjacks will then have off from competition until January before beginning their spring championship season Jan. 12 at the Mid-Winter Invitational in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
