Result: SFA goes 3-2 on day one, sits sixth among team standings (192.0)
Round Two: Saturday, January 28 | 9:30 a.m.
ARLINGTON, Texas – A near-perfect game in the final match of the day highlighted the opening day of the 2017 Prairie View A&M Invitational for fifth-ranked Stephen F. Austin. The Ladyjacks went 3-2 through Friday’s baker style matches and currently sits sixth in the team standings amongst the stacked field.
SFA set a new program-best, bowling a 299 in the third game against Vanderbilt in the final match of the day. The Ladyjack lineup, consisting of Morgan Reising, Kelsi Anderson, Megan Eaglehouse, Paige Kraushaar and Stephanie Schwartz, registered 11-straight strikes, but on Schwartz’s final throw of the game, the eight-pin stubbornly refused to fall, leaving SFA one pin shy of the perfect game. The 299 bests the Ladyjacks’ previous baker high game of 290, set against Cheney College on Jan. 28, 2011, nearly six years to the day.
SFA would defeat the Commodores 1,066-1,024 in the final match of the day, setting a day’s best mark to close out the opening round with the 3-2 record. The three victories on the day ups the Ladyjacks’ season record to 55-28 and 28-7 on the year in baker style matches.
The Ladyjacks struggled to find their groove early in the day, dropping the first two matches of the tournament. SFA fell to McKendree 1,087-890, followed by a 1,060-916 loss to top-ranked Arkansas State as the Ladyjacks registered just three 200-pin games between the two matches.
SFA’s momentum began to shift in the third match of the day, rallying with a 249-193 game five victory to hold off Jackson State 944-933. The Ladyjacks then began to regain their confidence, beginning with a 984-962 win over 10th-ranked Maryland-Eastern Shore leading up to the near-perfect game and victory over Vanderbilt in the day’s final match.
After the opening day of competition, SFA is sixth among the team standings in scoring average with a 192.0 average, sitting nearly four pins back of fifth-place Fairleigh Dickinson (195.8). Nebraska sits atop the team standings with a 201.6 average, followed by Arkansas State (198.3), Vanderbilt (198.1), McKendree (196.2) and FDU in the top-five.
Saturday, the tournament will make the shift to traditional team matches, getting underway at 9:30 a.m. The teams will bowl five matches Saturday and one more Sunday morning, setting up the seeding for Sunday’s best-of-seven baker style bracket play.
