HOUSTON – Brittany Lewis, Annie Mehringer and Autumn Holloway each slugged home runs, Callee Guffey was sharp in the circle and the Stephen F. Austin softball cruised past Houston Baptist 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at Husky Field. The Ladyjacks improve to 7-7 in Southland Conference play with the win, taking one of three from the Huskies over the weekend.
Mehringer and Holloway each went 2-for-4 at the plate, combing for three runs and three RBI to lead SFA offensively. Lewis blasted her team-leading seventh homer on the day while Mehringer and Holloway recorded their third dingers of the year.
Guffey (W, 6-4) nearly tossed a shutout, scattering six hits over a complete 7.0 innings. She surrendered just one run – in the bottom of the seventh inning – in her sixth winning decision of the year.
The Ladyjacks jumped in front 3-0 with three runs in the second frame. Lewis was hit by a pitch in the first at-bat of the inning and Mehringer followed with a two-run bomb to left center field. Faith Talley later capitalized on a pair of HBU miscues to score the third run of the game.
Holloway made it a 4-0 cushion for SFA with a leadoff homer to straightaway center in the fourth.
The sophomore infielder stayed hot with a double early in the sixth inning. She finished the round trip on a Talley RBI single through the right side, extending SFA’s lead to 5-0.
Lewis added some insurance in the seventh, scorching a solo homer down the left field line to make it a 6-0 advantage for the Ladyjacks. The Huskies would score once in the bottom half but it was too little too late.
SFA will next be in action on Tuesday afternoon at SFA Softball Field for a non-conference matchup with Prairie View A&M. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
