2016 All-Southland Conference Tennis Teams Release
FRISCO, Texas – Three Stephen F. Austin women’s tennis players found themselves on the receiving end of Southland Conference accolades it was announced by the league office today. Freshman Liza Aginskaya landed All-SLC First Team singles acclaim while senior Dhanielly Quevedo claimed All-SLC Second Team singles honors. Freshman Vanesa Calvo Pardo rounded out the Ladyjack contingent of all-conference honorees by receiving All-SLC Honorable Mention singles laurels.
“Any time we have individual success it’s direct reflection of the hard work we put in on a day-to-day basis and how dedicated the girls are when it comes to honing their abilities,” said SFA head coach Jon McLaughlin. “These individual honors would not have been possible, however, without every team member pushing each other in practices and in matches to play to the best that they can. I’m proud of Liza, Dhanielly and Vanesa for what they have accomplished, but hopefully their best is yet to come.”
Providing a substantial boost to the tail end of the Ladyjacks’ one-on-one flights, Aginskaya wasted no time in distinguishing herself as arguably the best number-six singles competitor in the Southland Conference. Out of Dneprodzerjinsk, Ukraine, the freshman completed the regular season as one of three Ladyjacks who put forth a 9-2 effort in SLC singles action. Those nine wins at number-six represented a Southland Conference high and all but one of her victories came in two sets. So far, Againskaya has notched a record of 11-9 through her first season in a Ladyjack uniform.
Following up her 2015 standing as the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year, Quevedo registered a league-high 13 triumphs from the number-two singles slot in her final season as a collegian. One of the most consistent SFA performers in league play, the Caracas, Venezuela, product notched a 9-2 mark playing exclusively in the second singles spot. Quevedo’s nine SLC victories in are tied for the most among all number-two singles players in the league. The winner of her last four singles matches, Quevedo has totaled 24 singles wins in SFA colors thus far.
Facing Calvo Pardo was not a task most opponents looked forward to through the course of 2016. Hailing from Ciudad Real, Spain, the freshman finisher submitted the clinch ball in no fewer than five of SFA’s victories and posted a team-high 15 wins through the course of her first season as a collegian. Each and every one of those successes occurred in either the fourth or fifth singles flights, but in league action her slotting was exclusively in the fifth flight. While stationed there, she played her way to a 9-2 record – those nine wins signifying the second-highest total among all SLC number-five singles combatants.
The aforementioned trio helped lead the Ladyjacks to a 12-9 record which included a 7-4 showing in Southland Conference showdowns. With the Schlief Tennis Complex serving as the competition site for the 2016 Southland Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament, SFA heads into postseason play as the number-two seed on their home courts. The Ladyjacks’ quest for a Southland Conference Tournament title begins on Friday at 11 a.m. when they take the court against number-seven seed Central Arkansas.
