NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin softball team used a doubleheader split against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon at SFA Softball Field to come away with its second straight 2-1 series victory in Southland Conference play. The Ladyjacks were edged 6-3 in game one before blanking the Islanders 6-0 in the nightcap.
Sophomore Callee Guffey (W, 5-4) recorded a quality start in the circle to help the Ladyjacks cruise to victory in game two. She allowed just five hits over 7.0 scoreless innings, didn’t surrender a walk and picked up three strikeouts en route to the winning decision.
Senior outfielder Lindsay Campbell and sophomore catcher Taylor Fraccastoro sparked SFA offensively in game two, each going 2-for-3 at the plate with four runs and two RBI combined. Sophomore second baseman Autumn Holloway also went 2-for-3 in the contest, tallying one run.
Campbell beat out an infield single on a bunt to open the third inning and later scored the first run of the game on a double to left field by Fraccastoro. Brittany Lewis followed with an RBI single to left to send Fraccastoro home, giving the Ladyjacks the early 2-0 lead.
Campbell once again initiated the scoring for SFA in the fifth inning. She scorched a triple deep into the right field gap and trotted home with ease on an AMCC throwing error with one out. Fraccastoro drove in her second run of the game on a single up the middle and pushed SFA’s advantage to 5-0 on a double steal attempt after Lewis reached on a walk.
Taylor Vick capped the scoring in the sixth inning, flaring an RBI single into right center. Holloway, who singled to open the frame, scored on the play.
Senior outfielder Alisa Hamilton had a good outing for SFA in the game one loss. She went 3-for-4 with two runs in the contest, accounting for half of her team’s hits.
SFA scored a single run in each of the first three innings but eventually ran out of steam. Hamilton singled on a perfectly executed bunt in the first inning and scored on a wild pitch two batters later.
Annie Mehringer doubled down the left field line to start the second and touched home when Taylor LeFlore laid down a suicide bunt. Hamilton singled and scored SFA’s third and final run when Lewis sliced an RBI groundout to short in the third inning.
The final run put SFA within one at 4-3 but the Islanders tacked on two insurance runs before the game was through.
Sophomore Makayla Sikes (L, 4-7) gave up six runs – three earned – on eight hits and was charged with the loss. She struck out seven batters on the day.
The Ladyjacks will next be in action on Wednesday at Texas A&M in College Station. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
