NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Fifth-ranked Stephen F. Austin opened up the 2016 NCAA Bowling Championships with a 1-4 record through the first five games of pool play at Carolier Lanes in North Brunswick, N.J. The Ladyjacks sit eighth among the eight-team field following day one, averaging a 954.6 through five games.
The reigning NCAA national runners-up opened up the first day of round robin pool play with Piney Woods rival Sam Houston State as the Ladyjacks fell to the Bearkats 1,042-1,003 in the opening match of the tournament. Freshman Dakotah Hazlewood had a strong start in her first NCAA action, bowling a team-high 221, with fellow first time junior Carly Larson bowling a 214. They were the only two to finish above 200 against SHSU with junior Paige Kraushaar registering a 191 and freshman Paige Beeney bowling a 190.
Match two pitted SFA against North Carolina A&T and the Ladyjacks rebounded to pick up their first win of the championships with a 977-942 win over the Aggies. Sophomore Stephanie Schwartz regrouped from a slow start to register a team-best 232, followed by a 204 from Kraushaar. Hazlewood had another strong showing for SFA, bowling a 194 to help lead the Ladyjacks to the win.
SFA then drew Vanderbilt in match three but dropped a 969-847 decision to the Commodores. No Ladyjacks were able to reach 200 with Hazlewood bowling a team-best 193, followed by a 185 from Schwartz.
Match four had the Ladyjacks bowling Central Missouri as SFA dropped another close match, falling to the Jennies 1,019 to 993 despite a day-high 237 from junior Kiara Grant. Sophomore Kelsi Anderson notched her first 200-pin game of the tournament with a 215, followed by a 192 from Schwartz, but Central Missouri outlasted SFA by 26 pins to earn the victory.
Thursday’s final match had SFA face a very familiar foe in Nebraska as the two teams did battle for the 12th time this season. Three Ladyjacks bowled in the 200s but it wasn’t enough as the Cornhuskers took the 1,002-953 win, dropping SFA to 1-4 on the day. Grant once again led the Ladyjacks with a 211, followed by a 202 from Schwartz and a 200 from senior Danielle Lynn to close out day one.
Schwartz and Kraushaar were the only two bowlers to see action in all five matches as Schwartz posted a 199.6 average with Kraushaar bowling a 188.8. Grant boasted the highest average of the day for SFA with a 203.3 mark in three matches played with Anderson adding a 198.0 average in her two matches.
Pool play continues Friday morning with SFA facing the remaining two competitors in the championship, beginning with top-ranked Arkansas State before finishing with McKendree. Following the conclusion of pool play, the teams will be reseeded based on the results of pool play and will begin the double elimination tournament Friday afternoon.
