McKINNEY, Texas – Stephen F. Austin endured another lengthy delay then some tough holes over the back nine, finishing tied for fourth at the 2016 Southland Conference Championships. The Ladyjacks posted a 29-over 317 over the final 18 holes, closing out the SLC Championships with a 62-over 926.
The tie for fourth matches the best finish in program history at the conference tournament, equaling the fourth-place finish for SFA at the 2015 championships at Stonebridge Ranch. The 926 is also the second-lowest team total for the Ladyjacks in the SLC championship, nine shots back of the 917 SFA posted last season.
For senior Sydney Reed, it was a strong finish to her Ladyjack career as she led SFA with a seventh-place showing, carding a 12-over 228 with a team-best 6-over 78 Wednesday. It marks the fourth top-10 finish of Reed’s collegiate career as she becomes just the third golfer in program history to register a top-10 finish at the Southland Conference Championships, joining Jessie White (1st – 2015) and Piper Kyle (T-3rd – 2014).
Reed was joined in the top-10 by reigning SLC champion Jessie White, tying for 10th overall with a 14-over 230. White fired an 8-over 80 over the final round for the ninth top-10 finish of her career and the fourth of the 2015-16 season as she becomes the first Ladyjack in program history to record a pair of top-10 showings at the conference championship.
Junior Ann Holcomb just missed registering a top-10 finish herself, tying for 12th in the individual standings with a 15-over 231, including a 10-over 82 over Wednesday’s final round. For Holcomb, it is her second top-20 showing of the season and the sixth of her SFA career as she is now one of just three players in program history to register two top-20 finishes at the Southland Conference Championships in their career, finishing tied for 15th in 2015.
Senior Mackenzie Steiner closed out her Ladyjack career tying for 24th overall, registering a 24-over 240 and matching Reed for the low round of the day for SFA with a 6-over 78. Junior Courtney Ford closed out the Ladyjack scorecard with a 28-over 244, tying for 30th after carding a 9-over 81 Wednesday.
SFA began the day in fourth-place among the standings and was playing well early on as the team was a combined 12-over par through the front nine, lead by an even-par 36 from Reed. But inclement weather forced a two hour delay and the wet conditions proved challenging as the Ladyjacks were 17-over on the back nine, slipping into a tie for fourth overall with Piney Woods rival Sam Houston State.
Lamar outlasted the field to win its fourth-straight conference championship, shooting a 34-over 898 and defeating Central Arkansas (42-over 906) by eight shots to capture the title. Houston Baptist (52-over 916) finished third with the Ladyjacks and Bearkats tying for fourth. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (85-over 949), McNeese State (93-over 957) and Incarnate Word (128-over 992) rounded out the scoring.
With the showing at the SLC Championships, SFA closes out the 2015-16 season as the Ladyjacks had another year of improvement, finishing in the top-10 in eight of their 11 events on the year. The Ladyjacks registered the second team title in program history, repeating as the UIW Lady Cardinal Classic in October, as White will finish the year with a 77.50 scoring average – the third best single-season mark for the Ladyjack golf program.
