SFA Slips to Seventh After Round Two at UTRGV Invitational

McALLEN, Texas – Stephen F. Austin shaved 25 strokes off its opening round score but slipped one spot in the team standings at the 2016 UT-Rio Grande Valley Invitational. The Ladyjacks fired a 23-over 307 in round two, sitting seventh overall with a 71-over 639 through 36 holes.
SFA’s 25-shot improvement was reflected across the board as four players shot sub-80 rounds with the highest score being an 81, matching the low score from Monday’s opening round. Junior Jessie White maintained her position, tied for 15th overall after posting a 4-over 75 to give her a 14-over 156 through two rounds.
Seniors Mackenzie Steiner and Sydney Reed both posted a 5-over 76 in round two, an improvement of eight shots for Steiner and 11 shots for Reed. Steiner sits at 18-over 160, tied for 22nd overall, with Reed’s 21-over 163 tied for 32nd overall.
Junior Ann Holcomb is tied with Reed at 21-over following her 9-over 80 in round two with junior Courtney Ford tied for 36th at 23-over 165 following her 10-over 81. Sophomore Jamee Jorgensen shot a 7-over 78 competing as an individual, tied a 24th at 19-over 161.
Beginning the day tied for sixth overall, the Ladyjacks dropped back one spot to seventh as other teams also took advantage of the more favorable weather conditions. SFA is seven shots back of sixth-place UT-Rio Grande Valley (64-over 632) and is nine strokes behind fifth-place Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (62-over 630), holding a nine shot advantage on eighth-place Louisiana-Monroe (80-over 648).
Lamar continues to hold the team lead at 39-over 607, holding a four shot lead on Wichita State (43-over 611), who overtook Houston Baptist (54-over 622) to sit as the tournament runner-up. Sam Houston State (57-over 625) jumped to fourth with A&M-Corpus Christi rounding out the top-five.
Wednesday’s final round gets underway with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. as the Ladyjacks will tee off on holes 10-13. SFA will play with Louisiana-Monroe and Incarnate Word in the final round pairings as full results will be posted to SFAJacks.com as they become available.
