SUGAR LAND, Texas – Opening the day tied for fifth among the team standings, Stephen F. Austin separated itself from the pack, finishing fourth at the 2016 Houston Baptist Husky Invitational. The Ladyjacks posted a 72-over 936 over the 54-hole event, including a 22-over 310 over the final 18 holes.
Senior Mackenzie Steiner finished the event tied for fourth individually, carding an 8-over 224 and finishing with a 4-over 76 in round three. For Steiner, it ties her best finish as a Ladyjack, matching her fourth-place finish at the ASU Lady Red Wolf Classic in 2014, as she records the fourth top-10 showing of her SFA career.
Steiner was joined among the top-20 by junior Jessie White, finishing tied for 11th with a 16-over 232. White posted a 6-over 78 in round three to help pace SFA as she recorded the 10th top-20 finish of her Ladyjack career, adding to her program record.
Junior Ann Holcomb tied for 26th overall with a 23-over 239, six shots better than senior Sydney Reed’s 29-over 245, tying for 34th overall. Junior Courtney Ford rounded out the SFA scorecard with a 35-over 251 as each SFA golfer other than Steiner shot a 6-over 78 in round three.
Entering the day in a three-way tie for fifth, SFA posted the fourth-lowest round of the day, helping distance itself from its competitors. The Ladyjacks closed out the tournament one shot better than Piney Woods rival Sam Houston State (73-over 937) and finished two shots better than Southland Conference foe Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (74-over 938), ranking third among the six SLC schools competing.
Host Houston Baptist captured the team title on its home course, shooting a 42-over 906 and defeating second-place Lamar (54-over 918) by 12 shots to secure the win. UT-Rio Grande Valley (66-over 930) finished third with the Ladyjacks and Bearkats rounding out the top-five.
With the HBU Husky Invitational now behind it, SFA sets its sights on the final tournament of the regular season, getting ready to compete in the 2016 Southland Conference Championships. The 54-hole event will be held April 11-13 at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney.
