NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin softball team gave up the go-ahead run on an error in the sixth inning and couldn’t spark a rally, falling to North Texas 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon at SFA Softball Field. The loss sets the Ladyjacks back to 12-16 overall on the season.
Alisa Hamilton, Annie Mehringer, Autumn Holloway and Lindsay Campbell each recorded hits during the game with Hamilton and Faith Talley scoring the two SFA runs. Mehringer drove in a pair on the Ladyjacks’ only extra-base hit of the day – a double in the fourth.
Senior pitcher Hannah Welch (L, 1-4) was solid in the circle, peppering the strike zone all afternoon. She scattered nine hits in a complete 7.0 innings, gave up three runs while just two were earned and struck out one.
After the Mean Green took a 2-0 lead with a pair of RBI singles in the top of the fourth inning, the Ladyjacks were able to get on the board in the bottom half. Hamilton and Talley walked to put runners on first and second with two outs, and later scored on a bases-clearing double to left center by Mehringer. The sophomore’s fourth double of the year knotted the contest at 2-2.
Two innings later in the sixth, UNT’s Danielle Gregory singled and got to second with two outs. She then took advantage of a throwing error to make it home, scoring the go-ahead run and putting the Mean Green up for good at 3-2.
Jessica Elder (W, 9-4) picked up the win for UNT, allowing two runs on four hits in seven innings.
UNT outhit SFA 9-4 over seven innings.
