NATCHITOCHES, La. – In a late 3-2 hole at Northwestern State on Sunday afternoon, two freshmen helped the Stephen F. Austin women’s tennis team rally for a dramatic 4-3 victory at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex.
"I am very impressed with the way we managed today's tough conditions," said assistant coach Juan Sanchez. "We showed a lot of energy and effrt in each of our matches and this win will definitely give us extra motivation as we move into a critical stretch of conference play."
Lauren Hidalgo-Smith drew the Ladyjacks level at 3-3 by finishing off Barbora Kollarova in the No. 4 singles match 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
It was then up to freshman teammate Vanesa Calvo Pardo in the final singles battle in action at No. 5. Also needing three sets, she was able to slip past NSU’s Polina Ivanova 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 to end the match and give the Ladyjacks their second Southland Conference victory of the season.
After the Lady Demons took the point in doubles, SFA and NSU split the top two singles matches. In a dogfight at No. 1, junior Denise Maxl was edged 6-4, 6-4 by Natalya Krutova before Dhanielly Quevedo got the Ladyjacks on the board with a convincing 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Iryna Vardanian.
Freshman Liza Aginskaya helped SFA draw even in the match at 2-2 in the next singles match. The Ukraine native won her No. 6 contest 6-0, 6-4 over Alzbeta Veverkova, claiming the only 6-0 set of the entire day for either team.
After NSU went up 3-2 with a win in the No. 3 spot, SFA’s other two freshman completed the comeback in their three-set thrillers.
The Ladyjacks will return home on Friday, March 25 to host Southeastern Louisiana. The match is set to start at 11:00 a.m.
